Homework #5
Problem 1:

A receiver is made up of three elements: a preamplifier, a mixer and an IF amplifier with

noise figures of 3dB, 6dB and 10dB respectively.
a. If the overall gain of the receiver is to be 30dB, and if the IF amplifier gain is 10dB,
determine the minimum gain of the preamplifier to achieve an overall noise figure on no
more than 5dB.
b. If its gain is set to this minimum, what would the system noise figure become if the
noise figure of the IF amplifier increased to 20dB?
c. Why the receiver designs are required to have a preamplifier with low noise figure
and higher gain?

Problem 2:

It is necessary to connect an antenna to a low-noise receiver with a transmission line.

The frequency is 10 GHz, and the distance is 2 meters. The choices are: copper X-band
waveguide, RG-8/U coaxial cable, or copper circular waveguide with an inner diameter
of 2.0 cm. Which type of line should be used for the best noise figure? Disregard
impedance mismatch.

Problem 3:

A certain transmission line has a noise figure F = 1dB at a temperature To = 290 K.

Calculate and plot the noise figure of this line as its physical temperature ranges from T=
0 K to 1000 K.

Problem 4:

An amplifier with a gain of 12 dB, a bandwidth of 150 MHz, and a noise figure of 4.0 dB
feeds a receiver with a noise temperature of 900 K. Find the noise figure of the overall
system.

Problem 5:

A PCS cellular receiver front-end circuit is shown below. The operating frequency is
1805-1 880 MHz, and the physical temperature of the system is 300 K. A noise source
with Ni = -95 dBm is applied to the receiver input.
