CASE STUDY ASSIGNMENT

QUESTION 1 - With the use of examples name the types of economic activities that take place in Ilse J.

One type of economic activity on Ilse J is the primary sector which is the use of raw material examples:
the cultivation of crops on fertile lands and the usage of crops to produce agricultural products.
The secondary sector is another economic activity because as the island developed increased growth in
the manufacturing industry was made and companies were established that converted food such as
bananas into finished goods in the latter portion the mining sector also became an important asset to Ilse
J. The tertiary sector was also a major focus after a time, examples include: the service of tourism,
banking, insurance, transportation and telecommunications.

QUESTION 2 - Describe three benefits that Ilse J could derive from its dependence on the primary sector.

[A] Greater support or investment to fiance the extraction of certain raw materials: for example bauxite,
gypsum and limestone Ilse J would have a great of amount of these resources at hand to use in its
development as well as to export to other islands who are in need of these resources and this could
generate revenue for Ilse J.

[B] Developing industries that could arise from the production of raw materials for example: a farmer
who plants cocoa beans might sell them to an artist who may use them in his arts design such as painting,
making beads e.t.c. The farmer may also sell to a company that can use the beans to make tea bags as well
as companies that may use it for medicinal purposes or even a restaurant that would use cocoa beans in
their meals.

[C] Expertise in fields such as manufacturing, farming, mining and fishing would be of high standard in
the scenario that Ilse J would depend on its primary sector for economic sustainance and economic
development. This could provide a system in which workers gain an opportunity to travel to work in their
respective fields.

QUESTION 3- A notes economist in Ilse J has stated that " The tertiary sector is the way forward in the
21st century for the country". Discuss your view of this statement, stating whether such a decision would
benefit or cost Ilse J.

From an economic standpoint the tertiary sector would be beneficial in many ways. Firstly this generates
a lot of foreign exchange for example through tourism, as we know persons travel on a daily basis and
tourism is one of those areas that contributes greatly to Gross Domestic Product.

Secondly the creation of jobs, the tertiary sector is a labour intensive sector as such many workers are
needed when looking at an area like tourism for example. In the long term this provides workers with
hands on experience, skills and competence in fields that require service. The primary sector and the
secondary use mainly raw materials and process those materials into finished goods while the tertiary
sector focuses mainly on the services.

This is a benefit as it will not deplete Ilse J natural resources. Some resources are renewable for example:
solar energy and wind energy while some are non-renewable for example:oil, natural gas and coal. It is
crucial that these resources are used wisely and conserved for when needed as well as future generations,
therefore this can restrain on the amount of natural resources needed to generate revenue for Ilse J.

Service is an intangible object as such once the recipient receives the service it ends there, this is essential
as it does not contribute to environmental pollution as a plethora of goods are not used when compared to
the primary and secondary sectors. In recent times we have been shown to be moving into a digital era
improvements in the banking sector, telecommunications and money services have been evident as most
entities have been moving to a virtual space including schools, billing systems and even the idea of a
cashless society and to use "digital money". In the world of work a highly requested field is the one of
Computer Science as it involves software engineering and program development. This is further proof
that a focus on the tertiary sector will result in great benefit for Ilse J in the long run.
