AFA Field Operating Instructions

1.0 Introduction

FMC Articulating Frac Arm (AFA) is a pre-assembled flowline piping system that
extends from the Frac truck to the manifold with minimum effort and eliminates clutter
of high pressure flowline iron on the ground during oil well fracturing. AFA assembly
has the necessary swivel joints and piping required to connect the pump discharge to
the frac or ground manifold in any configuration within a 12-foot span. Only one
connection is required to be made-up for each pumping unit.

3.0 Rig-Up to Frac Manifold or Ground Manifold

3.1 Spot the frac trailer as normally done at the job site with the center of the
riser swivel within 12 feet of the connection.
3.2 Loosen the hammerless union from parking sub (see figure 1)
3.3 Pump the hydraulic system up to 500 psi by pulling the lever arm of the
HPU toward you. The arm is now balanced.
Note: (1) It takes only 4-6 seconds to achieve 500 psi. Do not over
pressure.
(2) To bleed the pressure down if pressure is >500 psi, push
the lever forward slowly.
3.4 Disconnect R-Type retainer (Figure 5) from the J-support and swing the
lock tab up out of the way.
3.5 Pick up the handle (figure 1) and maneuver the lower arm upward to clear
the J-support slot.
3.6 Pull the lower arm away from truck. Pull the upper arm off the Upper
Support/Stop (figure 1) in order to achieve reach required to tie-in point.
Note: The upper arm has to be off the upper support/stop to achieve
all degrees of freedom without binding.
3.7 Grab both ends of the handle to steer/guide and position the hammerless
connection to align with tie-in point.
3.8 Make up the connection tight using hammerless union tools.
Note: At this point, the AFA is ready for pumping.
Warning
No operator should be under the lower arm at any point in time. Do
not bleed the hydraulic pressure at this point. Loss of hydraulic
pressure will cause the arm to droop and not be self supporting.
This can cause binding in the line similar to standard hookup.

4.0 Rig-Down and Park

3.1 Spot the frac tr ailer as nor mall y done onc e arrive at job site wi th the center of the riser s wi vel withi n 12 feet of the c onnecti on.

4.1 Disconnect Hammerless union using hammerless union tools.

Warning:
Confirm there is no pressure in the frac line before removing
connection.
4.2 Position the upper arm back onto its support/stop (figure 1&2).
Note: Observe position of the hydraulic hose to make sure it is clear
from the upper arm support/stop
4.3 Position the lower arm back on to J-Support (figure 5).
4.4 Position the Style 80 swivel back on to the parking sub using provided
handle and make up the hammerless union connection tight.
Note: Always use the handle to position AFA to avoid pinch point.
4.5 Swing the lock tab back to parking position shown in figure 5.
4.6 Install lock pin and replace R-Type retainer.
4.7 Bleed off HPU pressure by pushing the HPU operating lever away from
you slowly until gage pressure drops to zero.
4.8 To drain fluid that trapped in AFA riser swivel, remove drain plug (figure 1)
using Hammerless tools. Replace drain plug and hammer tight after all
fluid is drained.
Warning
Confirm there is no pressure in the frac line before removing
connection.
