ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT
MODULE 2: MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES(MELCs)

The education sector is not spared from the COVID-19 pandemic which continues to gravely
affect various governments and economies around the world. LCP), a package intervention that will
respond to basic education challenges brought about by COVID -19. the key elements of the learning
strategies that shall operationalize the BE-LCP are the streamlining of the K to 12 Curriculum into the
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs), and allowing of multiple learning delivery modalities
such as distance learning and blended learning, either on top or in place of face-to-face learning. To help
learners, parents, and teachers implement these learning delivery modalities, Self-Learning Modules
(SLMs) shall be made available in print and offline/online digital formats, for use this incoming school
year.
In this Module, the facilitator has discussed on what are the how’s, why’s and what’s of
development of the Most Essential Learning Competencies. It was discussed in the LAC session that
MELC is part of the streamlining of the Department for the K to 12 curriculums in this new normal in
education.
In the Lesson 1, we had two activities where I answered my fundamental concerns in the
curriculum standards is the delivery of quality education and holistic development to our learners. I also
gave my opinion on the congested curriculum where in teachers and learners are pressured to achieved
the targeted competencies per quarter even though there is an obvious congestion of learning
competencies. It was also explained the general and specific purposes of the development of MELCs
and how they reviewed or identified the essential learning competencies. We also identified that essential
learning area what will equip learning to a lifelong learning and its characteristics to be an essential
competency while desirable learnings may not be necessary in building foundation skills. We also asked
to have a copy of Curriculum Guides and MELCs to cross examine the merged/clustered, retained and
dropped competencies between the curriculum guide and MELCs.
In lesson 2 we were encouraged to unpack and combine MELCs into learning objectives. The
importance of unpacking is that equipping instructional space for teachers to deliver quality instruction
amongst the scarcity of learning modalities and reduction of the school year. Before we had our group
activity per grade level, we identify some considerations in unpacking and combining MELCs. We were
group according to grade level in which our group choose Mathematics, Filipino and Science as part of
our unpacking and combining of MELCs.
This LAC Session, I have come to realize that education or learning should not stop and there will
always ways to deliver learning to our learners. MELCs was one of those solutions or plans of the
Department. In this session I had an ample cross examining, unpacking and combining if MELCs is
possible to use MELCs for our learners. Learning competencies in the MELCs are identified as essential
because they are going to be used as foundation in building a life long process for the learners.
