CEMENTING GUIDELINES

Originator Date DCR No

Current Document Details

The objective of these guidelines is to highlight problems that have been seen during cementing and particularly
while displacing cement.

1. Pick-up the landing joint. Break circulation and circulate as program. Monitor losses during circulation.
Confirm sufficient circulation prior to cementing

2. Rig up the cementing unit and cementing head as per program.

3. A pressure sensor must be positioned (placed) on the cementing head and connected to cement unit
for reading and record.

4. All the operation will be recorded, including pressures and flows of displacement. Recordings will be
made by cementing unit.

5. Isolate rig pumps and proceed to cementing job as per cementing program.

6. Cement displacement

During the cementation of casing on several wells in HMD field and since cement displacement is made
with the rig pumps, problems have been faced regarding the operation of isolation valves. In some cases
by-pass valves have been left opened and false displacement happened, leaving considerable length of
cement inside casing. Consequently this part of cement job is critical and care should be taken about
valves leaking and isolation during cement displacement.

To avoid this problem the following steps should be checked carefully.

 On the cement line manifold, close the valve on rig pumps line (valve#1, refer to schematic
below) during pumping cement by cement unit.

 Follow up the pressure evolution according to pumping schedule.

 To ensure the displacement circuit is properly lined up, while pumping cement; keep around
300psi as a back pressure on rig manifold system and against valve #1.

 Once the cement unit finish pumping cement, switch the valve on cement line manifold and start
displacing cement with rig pumps. .

Continue cementing as program. Check losses during the operation and assess volumes of mud after the
cementation.
Bleed-off cementing line and check for back flow. Record recovered volume. If the bottom floats do not
hold, rock the float. If negative, re-displace the flow back volume, and maintain sufficient back pressure on
the casing to prevent cement re-entering into it. Maintain this pressure long enough to ensure that the
cement has set. Use surface samples as reference.
