Hi, everyone. My name is Ardelianda Augesla.

I’m from English Department Student Batch

2018, Error Analysis A1 Class. Today, I’m gonna explain to you guys about Global and Local
Error. Errors are consistent and based on “Mis-learned” generalizations , and It has two types of
it.

As we can see in this slide, Researchers in the field of applied linguistics usually distmguish
between two types of errors: performance errors and competence errors. Performance errors are
those errors made by learners when they are tired or hurried. Normally, this type of error is not
serious and can be overcome with little effort by the learner. Competence errors, on the other
hand, are more serious than performance errors since competence errors reflect inadequate
learning. In this connection, it is important to note that researchers (cf. Gefen 1979) distinguish
between mistakes which are lapses in performance and errors which reflect inadequate
competence. Other researchers (cf. Burt and Kiparsky 1974) distinguish between local and global
errors.

Global errors, Global error "global error" is an error due to the effect of the meaning of the whole
sentence (Norrish, 1983: 127). global errors hinder communication; they prevent the hearer from
comprehending some aspect of the message. On'the other hand, are more serious than local errors
because global errors interfere with communication and disrupt the meaning of utterances.
Global errors, for example, involve wrong word order in a sentence. This type of error causes the
listener or reader to misunderstand a message or think that a sentence cannot be understood.
Research defines global errors as communicative errors that cause a speaker who is proficient in
a foreign language to misinterpret a spoken or written message. The sentences used lead to
various interpretations. We expect this meaning, the realization is different because of the
meaning effect caused by the whole sentence.

Local errors do not hinder communication and understanding the meaning of an utterance. Local
errors involve noun and verb inflections, and the use of articles, prepositions, and auxiliaries.
Local errors do not prevent the message from being heard, usually because there is only a minor
violation of one segment of a sentence, allowing the hearer/reader to make an accurate guess
about the intended meaning. Local error can also be said that an error is caused by the use of
language which is common in certain areas and then used to communicate with people from
other areas.

SO, maybe that’s all from me. I’m really sorry if there are some mistakes according to my
explanation. Hope you guys understand, 2Stay healthy and see youuu!
