LEARNING CONTENT

Lesson 3 focuses on basic facts or nouns including name, country, occupation and nationality. A list
containing countries and occupations will be provided for you in this lesson. You will also be guided on how to
ask and tell one’s basic information to others.

Preliminaries (LEARNING TASK FOR WEEK 3)

In order for you to properly introduce yourself, you should have a Chinese version of your name. Search for your
own Chinese name on the website (www.mandarin.tools.com), review the given meaning and make a reflection whether
the meaning of your name best fits your personality. In your reflection, state the reason why you agree or disagree with
the provided meaning of your name.

Surname (first character) Given Name (middle character) Given Name (last character):

 Teng  Pan  rong

 look, gaze; expect, hope for  glorious

You were born in the Year of the Ox

Why is the zodiac sign different than I expected?

Why do I keep getting different names?

Hello, Pearl Tamboa! Above is the Chinese name which was "inspired" by your English name.
Chinese uses characters rather than an alphabet, so names cannot be directly translated from
English to Chinese. However, Chinese characters can be chosen which approximate the English
pronounciation, which is what this program does.

Chinese names generally have 3 characters. The surname, which is usually 1 character, comes first.
Next are one or two characters which are chosen by the parents (or the grandparents in traditional
Chinese culture). This program chooses the surname and given names according to the spelling of
your name and the characteristics you choose. The selection is not unique though. Everytime you
use this tool, you will likely get a different name. So if you don't like the first name you get, try
again.

This page is mostly created for entertainment. Real Chinese names should be chosen by someone
who knows the nuances of Chinese language and culture. Ask a native speaker if you want a
Chinese name you will actually use. Also, this tool will not translate Chinese names written in
English back to their original Chinese form.

FL-1 MODULE FOR WEEK 3-4

PRELIMS
This is a very common and informal way to ask someone’s name. Both answers can be used, but it’s
probably easier and more common to use the first one. Sometimes, less is more. This is the equivalence of
asking someone’s first name in English.

mínɡzi Name

Wǒ I

Shì Is,am

xìng Surname

In a Chinese name, the family name comes before the given name. When greeting someone, family
name comes first followed by his/her title and then the greeting.

(e.g., Péng lǎoshī, zǎoshang hǎo)

FL-1 MODULE FOR WEEK 3-4

PRELIMS
Quick Master
 Given names in China are usually one or two characters and come after the surname.
 It is not traditional for Chinese people to have a middle name.
 Women do not change their surname when they marry but continue to retain their family
name.

Country and Nationality

Below is how you ask which country a person comes from and how you state your country too.

Q: Which country are you from? (你是哪国人? – nǐ shì nǎ guó rén)

A: I’m from… (我是… 人 – wǒ shì… rén)

Since you are not from China, this is the most common way in which someone will ask you where
you’re from. To answer, simply insert the Chinese name for your country into the phrase “我是… 人.” For
example, I would answer “I’m American” (我是美国人 – wǒ shì měi guó rén)
