I. WHAT IS PRONOUN?

Pronouns are the words or a group of words that


substitutes a noun or noun phrase.

It is a word that can function by itself as a noun phrase


and that refers either to the participants in the discourse
or to someone or something mentioned in the discourse.

These are the words (I, we, she, he, they it, you, these,
those, all, one, who, what myself, herself, mine, yours,
his, hers and etc)

EXAMPLE:

1. Joe saw Jill, and he waved at her.

What are the pronouns in the sentence? The pronouns in the sentence are he and she,
ma’am.
Excellent! The pronouns used in the sentence are she and
he. As you can see, it take the place of Joe and Jill, so
that it will not be repeated in the sentence.

II. TYPES OF PRONOUNS

1. PERSONAL PRONOUNS

Personal pronouns are words associated with a certain


person, thing, or group. It always specific and are often
used to replace a proper noun or a collective group of
people or things.

The following are the 12 personal pronouns (I, we, she,


he, they, it, us, you, them, him, her and our)

EXAMPLES:

1. Jack and David are friends. They play basketball


together.
2. You need to stop lying to me.
3. Come look at my cat! He has climbed to the top
of that tree.

What are the personal pronouns used in the sentences? The personal pronouns used in the sentence are
they, you and he.

2. DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS

Demonstrative pronouns are words used to point to


something specific within a sentence.

There are only four (4) demonstrative pronouns (this,


that, these and those).

EXAMPLES:

1. This is a nice surprise.


2. Those are wild animals and very dangerous.
3. These are my favorite dishes.
4. That looks like fox.

What are the demonstrative pronouns used in the This, those, these and that.
sentences?

Excellent! The demonstrative pronouns used in the


sentence are this, those, these, and that. Sometimes, it is
confusing because this, that, those and these can be used
as demonstrative adjectives. But their difference is that a
demonstrative pronoun replaces the noun, while
demonstrative adjectives qualifies a noun.

3. INDEFINITE PRONOUNS

Indefinite pronouns refers to one or more unspecified
objects, beings, or places.

Here are some of the indefinite pronouns (anybody,


somebody, whichever, whoever, whatever, other,
something, and nobody). Notice in the examples that
there is no set position for where an indefinite pronoun
will appear in a sentence.

EXAMPLES:

1. Would anyone like a coffee?


2. Take whatever you like.
3. Whoever owns this is in big trouble!

What are the indefinite pronouns used in the sentences? The indefinite pronouns used in the sentences
are anyone, whatever and whoever.
That’s right kids! The indefinite pronouns used in the
sentences are anyone, whatever and whoever.

4. INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS

Interrogative pronouns are words that introduce a


question.

The following are the interrogative pronouns namely


(who, which, what, whose, and whom). We can usually
identify an interrogative pronoun by the fact that they
appear at the beginning of a question.

EXAMPLES:

1. Who will come to the party?


2. Which do you prefer?
3. What do you need?

5. POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS

Possessive pronouns are words designating possession or


ownership.

Possessive pronouns are the following (mine, its, hers,


yours, ours, theirs, and whose).

EXAMPLES:

1. This cat is mine.


2. Are these bananas yours?
3. This money is ours.

What are the possessive pronouns used in the sentence? Mine, yours, and ours.

That’s right! The possessive pronouns used in the


sentence are mine, yours, and ours.

different types of pronouns. Let’s have a short recap
