verb.

A. WHAT IS ADVERB

An adverb is a word that describes a verb,


an adjective, another adverb, or a sentence
and that is often used to show time,
manner, place, or degree.

In short, an adverb is a word that tell us in


what way someone does something, it
modifies a verb, an adjective or another
adverb.

to better understand the meaning and use of
the Adverb.

Examples:
1. Maria speaks quietly.
(The adverb “quietly” modifies the
word “speaks”.)
2. Paul is really handsome.
(The adverb “really” modifies the
verb “speaks”)
3. Ana is working too slowly.
(The adverb “too” modifies the
adverb “slowly”

Now, let’s proceed to the types of adverbs so


we have:
1. Simple Adverbs
2. Interrogative Adverbs
3. Relative Adverbs

Let's look at the types of adverbs in


detail.

1. Simple Adverbs
Simple adverbs contain only one
word and they are the most used
adverbs.

Simple adverbs are further divided


into many parts, and here are 6 types
of adverbs under simple adverbs.

a. Adverb of Time
Whenever you want to add an
information of 'when' to a verb, the
adverb of time will be your answer.
So, we can say that an adverb of time
shows the time or moment of doing a
task.

I will give an example for you to better


understand the Adverb of time.

Example:

'I will go there tomorrow.'


So, if you ask me when I go? I will answer it
by saying 'tomorrow'.

So, here, tomorrow is the adverb of time that


provides an information regarding the time of
the happening of an event.

b. Adverbs of Place
Whenever you want to add
information of 'where' to a verb, the
adverb of place will be your answer.
So, we can say that an adverb of the
place shows the place where the task
is being done or has to be done.

“You may sit here”

will be 'there'. So, here, 'there' is the adverb of
time that shows the place of the happening of
an event.

information regarding 'how often' to a
verb, the adverb of frequency will be
your answer. So, we can say that an
adverb of the frequency shows the

frequency with which the task has to


be done.
Example:

'I go for a walk daily.'

So, if you ask how often do I go for a walk?


The answer will be 'daily'. So, here, 'daily' is
the adverb of frequency that shows how
often an event takes place.

information regarding 'how' or 'in
what way', the adverb of manner will
be used, so, we can say that an

with which the task has to be done.

Example:

'I speak beautifully.'

So, if you ask how do I speak? I will answer


it by saying 'beautifully'. So, here,
'beautifully' is the adverb manner that shows
how or in what way an event takes place.

What is adverb of manner used?

e. Adverb of degree

Whenever you want to answer


something starting from 'how much'
or 'to what degree or extent', the
adverb of degree will be your
answer. So, we can say that an
adverb of degree shows the degree or
extent to which the task has been
done.

Example:

'He is extremely talented.'

So, if you question me how often how much


talent is he? I will answer it by saying
'extremely'. So, here, 'extremely' is the
adverb of degree that shows with what
degree an event takes place.

So again, what is Adverb of degree? an adverb of degree shows the degree or


extent to which the task has been done

Whenever you want to answer


something, starting from 'why', the
adverb of reason will be your
answer. So, we can say that an
adverb of the reason shows the
reason behind doing a particular task.

For instance:

'I go there because I love that place.'

So, if you question me, why do I go there? I


will answer it by saying 'because I love the
place'. So, here, 'because' is the adverb of the
reason that shows why an event happens.

Again, what is Adverb of reason? adverb of the reason shows the reason

2. Adverb of Degree or Quantity

Adverb of degree or quantity is an


adverb which tells us about the level
or extent of something is done or
happens in the sentence. It is used
before the adjective or adverb.
Adverbs of degree or quantity are
like almost, nearly, quite, much,
really, too, very, so, etc.

Example:

• It was too hard task for us to


complete. (adverb is used before
adjective)
• I am quite
• I am feeling really sad for my
friend's father death.

Negation

Adverb of affirmation and negation


is an adverb which confirms or
denies the action of verb in the
sentence. It is also used to reinforce

absolutely, etc however adverbs of


denial or negation are like no, can’t,
don’t, never, etc.

Example:

1. I will certainly go to the school.


(adverb of affirmation)

4. I never leave you alone. (adverb


of negation)

4. Adverb of Comment

Using adverbs of comment, we can


make a comment on entire sentence.
This adverb can change and describe
the verb as well as influence the
whole sentence. Adverbs of
comment are like fortunately,
unfortunately, patiently, honestly,
obviously, constantly, etc.

Example:

• Unfortunately, he got discharged


from his post.
• Luckily, I got admission in the top
college.
• Obviously, it is wrong way to do.
• We happily celebrated the birthday
of our class teacher.

5. Adverb of Conjunction

Adverb of conjunction help us in


connecting the ideas or clauses. It
shows effect, sequence, contrast,
cause or other relationships between
two clauses in the sentence. We need
to use a semicolon (;) to conjugate
two clauses. Adverbs of conjunction
are like anyway, accordingly,
consequently, again, contrarily,
almost, as a result, besides, certainly,
additionally, comparatively,
consequently, comparatively,
conversely, etc.

Example:

clause 1: He was going to attend an


important meeting.

Clause 2: He made sure to attend


meeting on time.

Use of Adverb of conjunction in


the above two clauses:

• He was going to attend an important


meeting; accordingly, made sure to
attend meeting on time.

6. Adverbs of Reason
Adverb of reason is used to express
the reason for, answer the question or
purpose of an action in the sentence.
Adverbs of reason are like therefore,
hence, thus, consequently, so, since,
etc.
Example:
• I was not working hard, therefore, I
failed.
• Consequently, he denied to come to
the party.
7. Adverbs of Number

Adverb of number is used to show


number of action of the verb in a
sentence. Adverbs of number are like
firstly, secondly, once, yearly, never,
twice, lastly, etc.
• Example:
• I eat food twice a day. (in this
sentence, 'twice' is an adverb of
number)
• He saw me once. (in this sentence,
'once' is an adverb of number,
however it can also be an adverb of
time depends on how it is used in the
sentence).

8. Interrogative Adverbs

Whenever you ask a question and the


question word is used as an adverb,
you are using interrogation adverbs.
They possess a unique feature, and
that is, they are placed at the
beginning of a sentence.

For instance:

'Why do you talk to him?'

Here, 'why' is a question word used


as an adverb. So, 'why' is an
interrogation adverb.

9. Relative Adverbs

Whenever an adverb is used to relate


or connect or join any two sentences,
we use relative adverbs. These
adverbs are just three- where, when,
and why.

For instance:

'I met him when no one was around.'

Here, when is the adverb which


connects the two sentences that have,
I met him and No one was around.
So, here, when is the relative adverb?

So, the types of adverbs are


mentioned here, which can be used
anywhere to make the text more
informative.
