2. Greetings

4. Attendance

That’s very good to hear! absentees for today.
B. Recall

Before we proceed to our new topic let’s have

first a recall of what we have discussed last
time.
Now, who can still remember the lesson that Ma’am the lesson we had last time was about the
we had last time? four kinds of sentences.

Very good! It was about the four kinds of

sentence.
Now what are those four kinds of sentences Ma’am the four kinds of sentences are the
and what are their differences? Declarative, Interrogative, Imperative and
Exclamatory sentence. Declarative sentence simply
tells something, Interrogative sentence asks
something, Imperative sentence gives a command
or makes a request and the Exclamatory sentence
is a sentence that tells, asks or commands with
strong feeling.

Very well said! It seems like you really

understood the topic we had last time.

However, do you still have any questions or

clarifications regarding to the functions of the
four kinds of sentences? None ma’am.

C. Motivation

Since you fully understood the topic we had

last time, I guess you are now ready for our
next topic.
But for me to assure that you will be really
ready for our next lesson, let’s have first an ice
breaker.
I have prepared here an activity called “Read
the Colors.”
Are you familiar with that activity? No ma’am.
Okay so what you are going to do is that you
will read the color based on the color itself, not
on what is written inside each circle.
Are you ready? Yes, ma’am!
(The teacher will conduct the activity.) (The students will actively participate in the given
activity.)
Did you have fun with the activity that we Yes, ma’am! It was a nice ice breaker ma’am.
had?

A. Activity Proper

I am glad that you have enjoyed the activity

that we had. So now, to continue to our new
lesson for today. I have here pictures of two
students sharing their ideas about how
Filipinos begin the year.

Kindly read their ideas and then later I will ask (The students will read the paragraphs.)
you some questions.
Now between the two ideas, which one was The second one ma’am because it used clearer
clearly conveyed? sentences.

How about the first one? Ma’am it says too much and her ideas become
crowded.
Very good observation!
The first one says too much at once with too
long sentences while the second one used
divided the sentences which makes it clearer
and easier to understand.
These are examples of Sentence Fragments
and Run-ons and this will be our new lesson
all about.

B. Analysis

Are you familiar with sentence fragments? No, ma’am.

Run-on sentences?
Do you have any idea about our new lesson? None ma’am.

Looking back to your previous school years

you have learned that a sentence will be only
considered as a sentence if it has a subject, a
predicate and expresses a complete thought.
Now, look and read the examples:
1. Filipinos love merry-making and festivities.
2. Celebrating occasions like birthdays and
weddings.
Now, which of the two word groups can be
considered as a sentence?
Very good! Why do you say so? The first one ma’am.
Ma’am because it has a subject and a predicate as
well as it conveys a clear thought.
Very good! The first example is a sentence
while the second one is an example of a
sentence fragment.
A fragment is less than a sentence which does
not give a complete.
For example:
1. Behind the tree.
2. With a mysterious smile.
3. During summer days.
4. The weekly magazine.
5. Throughout the day.

A fragment lacks from using a subject or a

predicate. Therefore, in order to avoid
sentence fragments always make sure that your
sentence has its subject as well as the
predicate.
Now let’s fix the sentence fragments. (The students will interactively participate in
1. The boy hide behind the tree. improving the sentence fragments.)
2. She looked at me with a mysterious smile.
3. I love visiting beaches during summer days.
4. The weekly magazine contains informative
articles.
5. We just had deep talks all throughout the
day. Yes, ma’am!
Is it clear to you?
Okay now let’s move on to the next one.
 February is a month of love, the
fourteenth of February is Valentine’s
Day remembering people we love like
our parents, teachers, siblings and
friends. Ma’am I have observed that the sentences or ideas
What have you noticed in the example? are too long.

Very good! If a sentence fragment does not tell

enough, a run-on sentence is a sentence that
tells too much at once.
Now look at this one.
 February is a month of love.
Valentine’s Day is on the fourteenth of
February. We remember the people we
love like our parents, teachers, siblings Ma’am the sentences are now clearer and easier to
and friends. comprehend.
What have you noticed?

Very good! The sentences were divided

through the use of end punctuation which
made the sentences sound better and easier to
understand.
Now let’s try these examples.
1. A typhoon was spotted over the Pacific
Ocean, moving towards Japan it will be code-
named “Claring.”
2.It enters the Philippine area of responsibility
tomorrow, there will be occasional rains and Ma’am it could possibly be improved as “A

winds.

None, ma’am.
Very well said! Yes, ma’am!
So question so far?
Are these clear to you?

C. Application

Since you already know how to

avoid sentence fragments and
run-ons, we will be having an
activity. It is called "Improving
Sentences." What you are going to do is to
rewrite the paragraph improving fragments
and run-ons. Kindly write your answers in a
one whole sheet of paper. I will give you five
minutes to finish the activity.
 The celebration in June is historical,
we celebrate Independence Day on
June 12, it is the time when the
Filipinos set up the first Philippine
Republic free from Spain. On this day
the President gives an address to the
nation then a long parade follows
schools, government offices, private
and civic groups participate in the
parade. Different floats make the
parade colorful they show highlights
in our history as a nation.
