Module Name Basic of Development
Module Number 07
Description of the module This module is aimed at equipping students with the necessary knowledge
in understanding the major contemporary development issues and the
nexus between gender, population, and environment in one side and
development in the other side. The module has intended to familiarize
issues and concepts related with natural resource management,
development finances, and quipping students with the necessary
knowledge and skill to formulate and able to manage development
projects. Parallelly, this module is aimed at equipping students with the
evolving understanding of development, major theories of development
evidence from different countries of the world. Moreover, it aims at
familiarizing students with unique nature and process of economic
development.
Objectives of the module The basic aims of the module are to:
Exposes students with the very essence of development as well as
contending theories and concomitant development policies and
practices
Presents the process of economic development and pivotal issues
Enable students to comprehend the concepts and theories of
gender and development and their interplay;
Familiarize students the effect and relation of population pressure,
environmental degradation and development and the vice versa;
Familiarizing student with environment and natural resource
management and its implication on development
Describe the concept, role, growth and sources of development
finance, and the role of government in the economy;
Distinguish between public budget, public expenditure, public debt
and public revenue.
Demonstrate practical knowledge in techniques of project planning
and management;
Module competence Identify the meaning, measurement, core values and objectives of
development, and analyze contending views on development;
Pin point the unique features of developing countries and obstacles
that hinder the achievement of economic development;
Explore mainstream issues in development such as population,
education, inequality and poverty.
Describe the concept of gender, development and their interaction;
Discuss the cause-effect relationship between rapid population
growth, environmental degradation and development;
Explore issues related with environment and natural resource
management and its implication on development
Understand each phase of the project cycle and the key
components in project management
Describe the concept, role, growth and sources of development
finance, and the role of government in the economy;
Distinguish between public budget, public expenditure, public debt
and public revenue.
