2. Course Description
Chief institutions for this theme would include administrative, social and cultural institutions
like administration, religion, language, intermarriage, adoption, etc. The phenomena of
Urbanization, modern education and the emergence of the intelligentsia, their efforts to
introduce European thoughts and practices are areas of emphasis. Relationships between the
monarchy, church and nobility and of these three with the rest of the society will be addressed.
Ethnic groups, social values, language groups, structures of government, art and other issues
will be highlighted. The analysis will relate politics to its economic underpinnings through a
discussion of central institutions. The impact of modernization on the indigenous institutions,
resettlement and villegization, civil society, cultural dynamics will be covered.
This course basically deals with diversity and pluralism which is an expression of Ethiopian
societies. The concepts and debates on multiculturalism, pillars of multiculturalism, plurality
and diversity, management of diversity will be discussed at a theoretical level. On top of these
theoretical frame works, the diverse nature of Ethiopia, and the different ways diversity was
managed under the successive regimes of Ethiopia will be appreciated.
3. Course Objectives
By the end of the course student will be able to
 Discuss social values and patterns of living in Ethiopia
 Examine cultural differences among the different Ethiopian nationalities;
 Elaborate the common cultural practices and bondages
 Mention the factors that led to social bondages
 Be acquainted with the idea and thinking of multiculturalism
 Grasp the significance of tolerance and develop pertinent skills to live with difference
 Compare and contrast different ways of managing diversity,
 Understand the various models of multicultural democracy
 Be familiar with the multicultural experiences of selected countries
 Appreciate the mosaic nature of Ethiopian societies
 Understand the multicultural approaches adopted by the respective regimes in Ethiopia
 Develop the necessary knowledge and commitment towards building Multicultural
democracy in Ethiopia
