Sand Stop Expandable Screen

HPOGC, along with its key partners, is at the forefront of
developing and applying expandable completion technology.
Rigorous planning and detailed engineering are at the core of
making this technology applicable in a wide range of
applications. With an ever increasing number of applications,
the next few years will see expandable completions playing a
bigger role within HPOGC’s and other operators’ sand
control portfolio.

SES System Benefits

 Is an expandable screen that can
achieve borehole contact and
eliminate the annulus without using a
gravel pack.
 Provides 36% more filtration/flow
area than other expandable screens
on the market.
 Stabilizes weak formations, allowing
them to withstand high depletions of
over 10,000 psi.
 Reduced exposure to logistics and
health, safety and environment risks
during installation phase.
 Reduced costs during the installation
phase.
 Reduced well count.
 Cased-hole functionality, in particular
compatibility with downhole flow
control (DHFC).
 Eliminating the need for multistage
cased hole gravel pack completions.
 An alternative to Open Hole Gravel
Pack (OHGP) completions.
 Improved sand control. SES BHA

SES Sand Stop Expandable Screen Joint

The SES joint consists of slotted steel tube, around which overlapping
layers of filter membrane are attached. A final layer of pre-slotted steel
plate is then formed around the outside, keeping the filter membrane
firmly sandwiched and protecting the filter media from damage during
deployment. The joints have integral slotted connections and because
there are no “blank areas” each part of an SES joint contributes to flow.
Connections are designed to be sand tight, both pre and post expansion.

Features
 Expandable Slotted Tubular
 Slotted base pipe
 Petroweave filter media
 Perforated protective outer shroud
 Sand-tight expandable connection

Benefits
 Improved productivity
 Effective sand control solution
 Large ID in reservoir section, improved inflow
performance
 Elimination of screen / hole annulus
 Borehole stabilization
 No blank sections at connections
SES Joint

Applications
The SES joints can be run using conventional rig handling equipment
and can be run in any length. Connections are made-up using a special
micro-grip tool then locked in position with “anti-rotation lock screws”.
Expansion is achieved either by compliant roller based expansion
system or by passing a tapered cone through the inside of the product.
During this process both inner and outer layers are plastically deformed
to achieve the desired dimension. The overlapping layers slide over one
another to accommodate the increase in diameter.

SES Expandable Top Connector

The ETC (Expandable Top Connector) is a short pre-formed section of
SES, which connects the SES assemble with the blank space-out pipe
at the top of the SES system. As well as being a crossover device, the
main function of the ETC is to provide an area to initiate expansion. The
construction is very similar to an SES joint with the exception of having a
pre-formed shape, and a standard VamFJL box connection at the top.
The ETC has an integral slotted bottom connection and because there
are no “blank areas” each part of an ETC contributes to flow.
Connections are designed to be sand tight, both pre and post expansion.

Features
 Crossover from SES to conventional pipe
 Standard box connection: VamFJL
 Wine glass profile

Benefits
 Improved productivity
 Effective sand control solution
 Large ID in reservoir section, improved inflow
performance
 Elimination of screen/hole annulus
 Borehole stabilization
 No blank section at connection
SES Top
Connector

Applications
The ETC would be run at the top of an SES string. Having made up all of
the SES joints as required, the ETC is then screwed into the top of the
last joint of SES. Conventional blank pipe is then run, to space out the
packer or liner hanger as required.

SES Expandable Bottom Connector

The EBC (Expandable Bottom Connector) is a short section of SES
which terminates an SES assembly and provides a run-off area for the
expansion tool to end the expansion process. The EBC is approximately
10ft long with the lower section being non-slotted and incorporating a
stub-acme pin / O ring seal enabling a bull plug to be attached. The EBC
has an integral slotted top connection and because there are no “blank
areas” each part of an EBC contributes to flow. Connections are
designed to be sand tight, both pre and post expansion.

Features
 Expandable slotted tubular
 Provides run off area for expansion cone
 Stub acme pin down

Benefits
 Improved productivity
 Effective sand control solution
 Large ID in reservoir section, improved inflow
performance
 Elimination of screen/hole annulus
 Borehole stabilization
 No blank section at connection
SES Bottom
Connector

Applications
The EBC would be run at the bottom of a single zone section of the SES,
or on the bottom of the lower zone for multi-zone SES applications. It
would be picked up separately using a standard SES lift sub. The EBC
being 10ft long allows for a run off area for the expansion process to
stop. If a pre-installed cone has been run then the cone will be left
behind in the EBC when the expansion mandrel is pulled from the hole.

The SCCV is an all metal double-acting float shoe, which can be run at
the Bottom of any liner or sand screen BHA. It is designed with a large
flow area and a low opening/closing pressure to allow fluids to be
circulated, when used in conjunction with wash pipe, through the valve
assemblies with minimal back pressure.

Features
 All metal construction ensure well life pressure
retention
 Baffle plate protects from balls/dropped wash
string damage
 Simple & robust construction

Benefits
 Allows circulation through EST string whilst
maintaining Sand Control

Applications
It would be run at the bottom of an EST. When used
inconjunction with wash pipe and stinger system it is
possible to circulate through the valve.

Applications
The mandrel is run on the bottom of an expansion string, essentially a
BHA consisting of drill collars and /or HWDP. The expansion BHA is run
in to the EST setting depth. By slacking off weight, the expansion
process is initiated. Typical expansion forces range from 18 to 35,000

EST Expansion Cone

The EST Expansion Cone is used in
conjunction with the Expansion Mandrel and
is designed to expand various EST products.
The cone is pre-installed inside the
Expandable Top Connector (ETC) at the top
of an EST string, and is driven through the
EST using weight applied by the expansion
mandrel.

SES Lift Sub

The SES Lift sub is screwed into the top of each SES joint and is used to
safely handle the joint in the elevators. All sizes of SES Lift Sub have a
standard size of body to suit 4 ½” Side Door Elevators. For strength and
reliability the lift sub has a single piece body.

Features
 One piece body
 Standard 4-1/2” OD size of body

Benefits
 Allows SES to be picked up and handled with standard rig
equipment

Applications
The SES lift sub must be used for all SES deployments. Once the lift sub
has been screwed into the SES joint, anti-rotation screws are installed to
prevent it backing out. The lift subs for 2 7/8”, 3 1/2”, 4” and 4 1/2” SES
have a sliding sleeve to protect the SES box during lifting operations to
the rig floor.

SES Stabbing Guide

The SES stabbing guide is required to aid the correct stabbing of the
SES joints. It has been specifically been designed for the SES
connection. The guide serves to protect the box, pin and petroweave
during the stabbing procedure.

Features
 Simple to use
 Available for all sizes of SES

Benefits
 Allows SES to be stabbed without damage to connection or
petroweave

Applications
The SES Stabbing Guide must be used for making up all SES
connections. During operation the guide is clamped around the SES box
in the rotary table. The profiled ID of the clamp guides the SES pin and
weave into the correct position for connection make up.
