Beamforming Overview
 Beamforming is a downlink multi-antenna technique

 With beamforming ,the eNodeB transmitter weights signal to

form narrow beams towards the target UE

 Before transmitting signals, the eNodeB weights them to form

beams towards the target UE.

 Weighting involves common channels and traffic channels.

Dual Streaming Beamforming VS
MU-Beamforming
 Dual Streaming Beamforming
 Two code words to be transmitted in this mode are assigned to the
same UE

 It is used in case of the UE channels have a low correlation

 MU Beamforming
 Two code words are transmitted, each of them is assigned to one user

 It is used in case of one UE’s channels are of a high correlation

MU Beamforming Pairing Process
 In each TTI, eNodeB performs following processing:
1 Select candidate UE for MU beamforming pairing:
 The CQI value >= specified threshold.

 The UE transmits in TM 8

2 pairing attempt based on:

 Spectral efficiency improvement

 UE channel correlation

3 The eNodeB instructs the paired UEs to use the same time-frequency
resource for data transmission.

Difference Between Dual Streaming/MU
Beamforming
 Dual Streaming Beamforming
 Two code words to be transmitted in this mode are assigned to the
same UE

 It is used in case of the UE channels have a low correlation

 MU Beamforming
 Two code words are transmitted, each of them is assigned to one user

 It is used in case of one UE’s channels are of a high correlation

Single-Stream/Dual-Stream/MU Beamforming
Adaptive Selection
 eNodeB adaptively performs Single- or Dual-stream beamforming
based on radio channel conditions.

 UEs that are unsuitable for Dual-stream beamforming are selected
