Chapter 7 Terms

1. Balance - an even distribution of weight enabling someone

or something to remain upright and steady
2. central vision - Good central vision allows a person to see
shapes, colors, and details clearly and sharply.
3. color vision - Color vision is an ability of animals to perceive
differences between light composed of different wavelengths
independently of light intensity.
4. commentary driving- is a technique whereby the automobile
student driver “speaks out” all his/her observations.
5. depth perception - the ability to perceive the relative
distance of objects in one's visual field.
6. distance vision - vision for objects that a 20 feet or more
from the viewer.
7. giving meaning- providing love or other emotional support;
caring.
8. glare recovery - time (GRT) is an important, convenient and
noninvasive method for evaluating the driver's ability as to
how fast he recovers
9. glare vision- the loss of visual performance or discomfort
produced by an intensity of light in the visual field greater.
10. hearing- the faculty of perceiving sounds.

11. intersection - a point or line common to lines or surfaces

that intersect.
12. night vision- the faculty of seeing in very low light,
especially after the eyes have become adapted.
13. peripheral (fringe) vision - The area of vision to the left and
right of the area of central vision
14. pitch- highness or lowness of sound
15. roll- move or cause to move in a particular direction by
turning over and over on an axis.
16. scanning- look at all parts of (something) carefully in order
to detect some feature.
17. searching- thoroughly scrutinizing, especially in a
disconcerting way.
18. sound- convey a specified impression when heard.
19. vibration- an instance of vibrating.
20. visual acuity- sharpness of vision, measured by the ability
to discern letters or numbers at a given distance according to a
fixed standard.
21. yaw- (of a moving ship or aircraft) twist or oscillate about a
vertical axis.
Chapter 8 Terms
assumption - a thing that is accepted as true or as certain to
happen, without proof.
2. choice - an act of selecting or making a decision when faced
with two or more possibilities.
3. comparison- a consideration or estimate of the similarities or
dissimilarities between two things or people.
4. following interval-  a space of time between events or states.
5. human-perception time - The study of time perception is a
field within psychology, cognitive linguistics and neuroscience
that refers to the subjective experience, or sense, of time,
6. margin of safety - is an investing principle that involves only
procuring a security when its market price is substantially less
than its intrinsic value.
7. option - a thing that is or may be chosen.
8. response zone - A response policy zone (RPZ) is a
mechanism to introduce a customized policy
9. space cushion - is a buffer around your vehicle that you
maintain to allow room to maneuver, if necessary.
10. space margin -  separating text or other elements from the
edge of the paper commonly adjusted through the page setup.
11. vehicle-reaction time- as the period from the moment the
danger occurs to the moment when the driver takes specific
actions on the car's controls to avoid an accident.
12. visual control zone - the zone where you identify
objects/conditions that may require a response or continuous
attention.
13. visual lead- time is the distance of attention that a driver
should pay attention to.

Chapter 7
Lesson 1
This lesson will discuss visual acuity, distance vision, depth
perception, central vision, and peripheral vision, as well as the
problems of night vision and glare.

Lesson 2
Two important functions of the ear, hearing and balance, are
discussed along with how they affect driving. You will learn why
the sense of touch is important in driving.
Lesson 3
The necessity of using systematic sensing and scanning while
driving is explained, including looking ahead, behind, and to
both sides.
Lesson 4
This lesson will enable you to give meaning to the information
the senses provide by recognizing information, identifying its
value, and seeing relationships between bits of information.

Chapter 8

Lesson 1
In this lesson, you will explore options and their role in the
driving process. You will describe the role of assumptions and
the importance of choices in the driving process.
Lesson 2
This lesson identifies highway conditions that determine a need
for speed adjustment. You will describe how signaling helps you
manage time and space.
Lesson 3
This lesson describes five margins that are important on your
intended path of travel. You will identify the rules for maintaining
a safe margin between your vehicle and what you can see on the
road.
Lesson 4
You will explain how maintaining a margin of safety relates to
minimizing risk. You will describe the rules for maintaining a
space margin, a visibility margin, and a time margin for safe
driving.
