About the Creo Parametric Drawing Mode

Creo Parametric offers functionality to work with engineering drawings in Drawing mode
with the Detail module. Use this module to perform the following operations:
• Create drawings of all Creo Parametric models.
• Export drawing files to other systems and import files into Drawing mode.
• View and annotate models and drawings.
• Manipulate dimensions, and use layers to manage the display of different items. Creo
Parametric associates drawings with their parent models. The model automatically
reflects any dimensional changes that you make to a drawing. In addition,
corresponding drawings also reflect any changes that you make to a model (such as
the addition or deletion of features and dimensional changes) in Part, Sheetmetal,
Assembly, or Manufacturing modes.
• Work with various view types. All views in the drawing are associative. If you change a
dimensional value in one view, other drawing views are updated accordingly.
• Work with multiple sheets in the drawing.
• Add and modify different kinds of textual and symbolic information.
• Define mapkeys for drawing operations. Execute the mapkeys in any of the tabs
irrespective of whether the tab is active or not.
• Customize engineering drawings with sketched geometry, create custom drawing
formats, and make multiple cosmetic changes to drawings.
• Use shortcut menus to modify an object in a drawing from anywhere in the Model Tree,
Drawing Tree, or the graphics window. At any time when a drawing window is active,
you can interrupt your current process and activate a drawing object for modification.
• Create 3D parametric, feature-based models from 2D drawing data using AutobuildZ.
The 2D drawing data can be imported to Creo Parametric from any of the supported
file formats, such as DXF, DWG, and IGES. Additionally you can use the following
capabilities of AutobuildZ:
◦ Clean up 2D data by moving unnecessary and unwanted data to blanked layers.
◦ Associate the parts with the active drawing in session.
◦ Create features in the active part by selecting geometric entities on the drawing in
session.
◦ Map the views of the drawing to datum planes in the parts.
◦ Automatically regenerate the drawing views of the active part on a separate drawing
sheet when features are added to the active part.

2/16/2020 Selecting Objects in Drawings

Detailed Drawings > Detailed Drawings Basics > Selecting Objects in Drawings

Selecting Objects in Drawings

Depending on the type of tasks, you can select a specific drawing object or multiple
object types simultaneously:
• Individual—Select drawing items individually. Move the pointer over the desired drawing
element and click to select.

Holding
down the
CTRL key,
selects
multiple
elements
one at a
time.

• Region—Select a region by dragging the pointer to designate the area in which to select
objects. Generally, only top-level objects are selected. For example, you can select a
note but not the note text.

◦ Inside/across box:

▪ Drag the 2D box from left to right — Creates a rectangular plane. Entities that lie
inside the box are selected.
▪ Drag the 2D box from right to left — Creates a dotted rectangle. Entities that lie
within or across the boundaries of the box are selected.

◦ Inside polygon
— Selects drawing items that lie completely inside the polygon region
Additionally, you can also use a few other selection methods for drawing objects:

object filter settings for each tab are applicable as long as the
drawing is in session.

Some objects on the drawing sheet are not available for

selection in the drawing object filter. Select them using the search
tool or by holding down the ALT key.

Preselection Provides a visual confirmation for the item that will be selected before
Highlighting you select it. By default, as the pointer passes over an object, the
object is highlighted. A tooltip displays the object name. For example,
d92: F9(HOLE) indicates the diameter dimension for the ninth model
feature, a hole.

Detailed Drawings > Detailed Drawings Basics > About Cut, Copy and Paste

About Cut, Copy and Paste

When you cut or copy items, they are copied temporarily to a clipboard. They can then be
pasted onto the same sheet, a different sheet, or into a different drawing.

Parameters in notes are copied as parameters and are evaluated on the target drawing. If
a parameter cannot be evaluated on the target drawing, three asterisks are displayed to
indicate this.

Tables with regular text (no repeat regions) are copied as text. When pasted, the text
looks as it does on the source drawing. Tables with repeat regions are copied with the
report symbol names and have to be updated on the target drawing using Table >
Update Tables. Alternatively, click Update Tables in the Update group of the
Review tab to perform this task.

Rules for Copying between Drawings

The following rules and restrictions apply to copying drawing objects:
• The source and target drawings must use the same units.
• Notes, balloons, and symbols with leaders are copied with their leader. The leader is
copied as it looks on the source drawing. You can move the end of the leader on the
target drawing by dragging its endpoint and jog to the desired locations.
• Notes that contain dimension parameters (that is, &d23) cannot be copied. Notes that
contain other parameters can be copied.
• Tables are copied as follows:
◦ Tables without repeat regions are copied as text and look the same as they do on the
source drawing.

◦ Tables with repeat regions are copied with the report symbol names and have to be
updated on the target drawing using Table > Update Tables. Alternatively,
click Update Tables in the Update group of the Review tab to perform this
task.

2/16/2020 Undoing and Redoing Drawing Operations

Detailed Drawings > Detailed Drawings Basics > Undo/Redo in Drawings > Undoing and Redoing Drawing Operations

Undoing and Redoing Drawing Operations

As you dimension and detail your drawings you can undo and redo some general
operations. Such flexibility ensures that the appropriate action is taken and also allows
further exploration of some of the detailing capabilities.

To Undo a Drawing Operation

After completing the operation

• Click .

• Press CTRL+Z.
• Click Edit > Undo <command name>.

To Restore a Drawing Operation

After undoing the operation

• Click .

• Press CTRL+Y.
• Click Edit > Redo <command name>.
You can only undo and redo some of the top-level operations.

Undo and Redo do not preserve the revision number of the object. For example, if
an associative part dimension is created in the drawing, and you perform undo on
dimension creation, the part and drawing are still considered modified.
Any command that changes the active model (this can be done with File > New,
File > Open, File > Close Window, File > Erase > Current, File > Delete >
[current], File > Exit, Window > Activate, Window > Close) clears the stack .
However, these commands can still be invoked and not change the active model, and
therefore will not clear the stack in that case. Such an example would be if multiple
windows of the same drawing sheet were open, and Window > Activate was used to
activate one of these windows.
Any command that changes both the active window and the current drawing page
number will clear the stack.

Detailed Drawings > Detailed Drawings Basics > Undo/Redo in Drawings > Managing the Stack

Managing the Stack

To technically make undo/redo operations possible, completed drawing operations are
stored sequentially in memory, or the stack. The level of support for drawing operations is
divided into three categories based on how the operations affect the stack:
• Supported Undo/Redo Operations
• Operations not supported (Do not clear the stack)
• Operations not supported (Clear the stack)
A command that changes the active model will clear the stack. For example, clicking File
> Manage Session > Erase Current and accepting Yes will clear the stack. However,
clicking File > Manage Session > Erase Current and then declining the model change
with No will not clear the stack. The stack is not cleared during general navigational
operations, such as toggling navigation panes, collapsing and expanding the browser,
changing the drawing object filter, opening shortcut menus from the Drawing Tree or the
Model Tree, unlocking view movement, or accessing context sensitive and online Help.

You cannot perform an undo operation after moving sectional arrows. Moving
sectional arrows clears the stack.

2/16/2020 About View-Only Mode

Detailed Drawings > Detailed Drawings Basics > View-Only Drawings > About View-Only Mode

About View-Only Mode

If you simply want to view or quickly check a drawing, you can reduce the amount of time
it takes to retrieve it by opening it in View-Only mode.

In View-Only mode, the system does not retrieve any of the associated model files when
it opens the drawing. However, since the solid models are not in session, the system
temporarily freezes the drawings, so you cannot modify them.
A prerequisite to using view only mode is that the configuration option save_display is
set to yes the last time the file is saved in normal mode. This lets the drawing file
"remember" the 3D dimension locations and values without having to access the 3D
model files.

If you decide that you do need to modify a drawing in view only mode, you can use File
> Retrieve Models to retrieve all of the models in mid-session.

• If the geometry display information of a view is missing, the system displays an

empty view boundary.
• Since the system does not retrieve any of the associated solid models, plotting (for
example, complex overlap checking) does not function the same way that it does in
Drawing mode because much of the information is missing.
• If you store the display with snap lines in Drawing mode, the system plots them in
View-Only mode.
