NOTE: Answer any FIVE full questions, selecting at least TWO full questions from each Part
Use of Gas Tables permitted
PART A
2. Derive an expression for maximum heat transfer for Rayleigh flow in terms of Mach number.
(10)
3. Explain Rayleigh curve using a T-s plot and necessary equations. (10)
4. Air enters a combustion chamber at 0.4 bar, 300 K and 60 m/s. Determine the Mach number,
pressure and temperature at the exit, if the stagnation enthalpy increases by 1150 kJ/kg. (10)
PART B
6. Air enters a 0.3 m diameter pipe at a rate of 990 m3/s, 152 kPa and 240 K. The length of pipe is
50 m. If the mean coefficient of friction is 0.005, determine the exit Mach number. What is the
length of pipe needed for choking the flow? (10)
7. Explain Fanno curve using a h-s plot and necessary equations. (10)
8. The Mach number of air at the exit of a nozzle is 1.2. Air enters the nozzle from a large
reservoir at 0.7 bar and 300 K. If the throat area is 0.14 m 2, calculate pressure, temperature and
velocity at the exit. (10)
