Beliefs about Classroom Management

My philosophy for classroom management in my special education classroom is that everyone

should feel invited, safe, and excited to be here and learn. Students should feel comfortable

asking questions and expressing their feelings in my classroom about school and home-related

things. I want my students to know that I love them, and I want them to do great things and that

is why I push them out of their comfort zones to test their ability. I want my students to be kind

and to treat everyone the way they would want to be treated. If they practice positive behavior

habits, they will develop a more positive outlook on life as they grow. I want my students to

know that I am modeling how I want them to act at all times, and I will constantly remind that

they are smart, worthy, and capable of learning new things every day. I want my students to

know that they are accountable for their own behavior and that they are in charge of the attitude

that they bring to school every day. When disciplining my students, they will be given a verbal

warning privately and not in front of the class. My students need to know that I care about their

behavior and how important it is to follow the rules in my classroom and in life. I want my

students to feel comfortable coming to me if they feel angry or frustrated with someone or

themselves and they need to go to the sensory or cool down area to deal with their emotions. I

will implement the reflection discussion/paper at the end of each week for those who had less

than 3 jewels. I feel that it is important for students to understand why they are not rewarded and
why consequences are put into place for negative behavior. If students reflect on their behavior

from the week verbally or in written form, they will understand that their behavior is not

positive. The students that are capable of giving an example of what they could’ve have done

differently to show positive behavior will do so. My classroom will be a safe haven for students

to learn using different modalities and explore their interests. My students will learn how to

construct their own knowledge and understand that they are in control of their success in my

classroom with my help and encouragement along the way.

Support from Theories

My beliefs in classroom management and philosophy of teaching is inspired by psychologists

John Dewey and Jean Piaget. John Dewey inspired me to utilize his teaching approach of

instrumentalism while Jean Piaget also inspires me to utilize the constructivism approach. I wish

to teach in a special education classroom and in the field of special education, students will learn

from using hands-on approaches which is what Dewey dedicated his life and studies to. John

Dewey believed that the curriculum should be flexible and change as the students grow and

learn, as did Piaget. I want to teach using their theories because special education students learn

and grow every day, and I will take on the responsibility of studying each of my students and

finding forms of communication to fully understand my students and their learning processes. I

feel that instrumentalism, learning to solve real world problems, and constructivism, learning by

doing, go hand in hand. In order to relate schoolwork to real world problems you are going to

have to use your hands as did the students of John Dewey who used measurement skills to sew,

and math and fractions skills to cook. As Dewey believed that the curriculum should change as

students change, Piaget believed that students experience four changes of thinking as they grow

and these stages shape how they see and learn about the world. Both theorists strived for students

to learn in ways that will benefit them, and I wish to create the same type of learning

environment. Inquiry-based learning is an important part of constructivism, as students are

encouraged to construct their own knowledge about a concept. My instruction will be student

and community centered as I prepare my students to live and thrive independently in society.

Dear (Student’s Name),
I am so excited that you are one of my new students this year. I have
been busy getting our room ready and planning some super fun
things for us to do in school this year. Please draw me a picture
below of how you are feeling about starting school. I can’t wait to
meet you, see you soon!!
Your new teacher,
Letter of introduction to parents
Ms. Repass
October 8, 2020
Dear parents and/or guardians,
Welcome to my special education class! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself
and give you some important information about what we’ll be accomplishing as your child
completes their appropriate grade level for this year. First off, my name is Autumn Repass and I
am one of the special education teachers here at Brushfork Elementary School. I obtained my
education degree from Bluefield State College in K-6 education and specialized in special
education and Autism. I want to thank you for allowing me to not only teach your child the
academics they will need to succeed, but to form a relationship with them in hopes to bring out
their strengths and weaknesses and teach them how to utilize these as they go through life.
Throughout this school year your child will take their reading, language, writing, and math skills
to a whole new level. While learning reading and language arts your child will learn to read with
great expression and be able to sound out new words on their own. Their math lessons will
consist of learning to solve problems involving money and time, learning how to measure
objects, and learning the importance of place value. Our science and social studies lessons will
be incorporated with our math and reading lessons, which will be alternated every other week.
We will be doing some interesting and fun research and science projects once every four weeks
where your child will be partnered with someone different every week, and they will research
and work together to create an awesome science or social studies project. You will have the
opportunity to come in and check out these projects at our monthly open house in the cafeteria. I
encourage you to take the time to come and see your child’s work as they will have put in much
time and effort towards these projects.
My discipline system for this school year consists of each student getting 5 “jewels”, one for
each day of the week. These jewel stickers will be placed on their cubicle where they can see
them, but they must not touch them. The students will be reminded often of the classroom and
school rules as well as encouraged to make responsible and well-mannered choices. If students
are not following rules or making good choices, they will be given a warning that I will take one
of their jewels. If the student continues to misbehave a jewel will be taken. If by the end of the
week the student has all five jewels they will be permitted to get in the treasure box that Friday,
if the student has only 3 jewels they will receive a sticker and be encouraged to make better
choice next week to receive a prize from the treasure box. If the students has 2 jewels or less they
will be asked to have a reflection conversation with me about the choices they made this week
and why they were not rewarded with a sticker or a prize from the treasure box. If the student is
capable of writing a reflection on their behavior, they will be asked to do so and then read it to
me. If the student’s behavior throughout the week continues to get worse, they will receive a
decrease in recess time. The next step will be a visit to the principal’s office and then a phone
call home.
A supply list of necessities for the upcoming school year is attached to this sheet. If you cannot
supply everything that your child needs, feel free to contact me or the school secretary and we
will work together to gather the needed supplies. As an educator and mentor, I hope to inspire
your child to do their very best in all that they do, but most importantly all I require of them is
that they try, and then I can help take care of the rest. I am looking forward to a productive, fun-
filled school year, and I cannot wait to watch your child learn and grow. Feel free to contact me
through the email listed below, call the school during my planning from 10:50-11:25, or leave a
message with the secretary and I will return your call. Thanks in advance for your support as we
embark on this upcoming school year.
Sincerely, Email: autumn.repass@k12.wv.us

Supply List for Ms. Repass’ Class

All of the supplies listed below will be used by your child only,
with the exception of tissues.
 Durable folder
 Two, one subject notebooks
 A pencil case
 Pack of pencils (no mechanical)
 Box of crayons
 Pack of colored pencils
 2 glue sticks
 Box of tissues to be used throughout the school year

Arrival Procedure
When students arrive, they will take off their jackets and backpacks, take their folder out of their

backpack and place the folder in their cubby with their name and picture on it. The cubby with

have the name and picture to help students recognize their name. The students will then hang up

their jacket and their backpack and get out their water bottle if they have one and place it on their

desk. The students will then go by the “How are you feeling today” chart and take a Velcro face

and place it under which word they are feeling that morning. There will be three options, happy,

sad, I’m okay. If breakfast has been laid on the table, the students will be instructed to go by and

grab one of each and go sit at their desk with their hand raised waiting for a squirt of hand

sanitizer. If breakfast is not laid out on the breakfast table students will return to their desk and

wait patiently for it to be handed out to them. Students will be instructed to raise their hand if

they need something opened or have a question. While eating breakfast students will listen to the

nursey rhyme or read aloud that I’ve chose for that week.

Dismissal Procedure

10 minutes before its time to go students will be dismissed to use the restroom. After the

restroom they will be instructed to get their folder out of their cubby and get their behavior chart

out and the color the number of jewels that the student had remaining at the end of the day. After

they have colored their charts, they will place them back in their folder and put their folder in the

backpack. Students will then put on jackets if need be and put on their backpacks. Students will

be instructed to wait patiently until their bus or parent has been called. I will play some music for

students to enjoy and dance to at their seat while they wait.

Tardy Procedure
If a student is tardy, they will report to the office and sign in and then complete the classroom

arrival procedure as normal. If breakfast is still available, the student will be offered breakfast

and then they will join in with the classroom activities.

Absent Procedure

If a student is absent, they are responsible for completing the makeup work from the day that

they missed. The teacher or aide will place the makeup work in the student’s folder with a note

to finish the work along with the current days homework, however the teacher will not constantly

remind the student to complete the work. For example, if the student misses on Tuesday, then

Tuesday’s work will be place in the student’s folder on Wednesday with Wednesday night’s

work with a note asking the student and parent too complete both sets of work.

Homework Procedure

Homework will be assigned nightly. There will be one review page for math, whatever math

concept the student is working on in class, 1 handwriting page which may include name,

numbers, alphabet or specific letters. Some students may be required to review sight words,

vocabulary words, or spelling words depending on what each student is assigned. Students will

also be encouraged to listen to a story from the journey’s website at home if they have

accommodating materials such as interest, laptop, phone, tablet, etc. Students will be asked to

complete the work at home and place it back in the homework side of their folder to return the

next day. The classroom aide or I will check the homework for completion each day.

Procedures for getting students attention/getting teacher’s attention

To get the students attention I would use call and response phrases such as (Teacher) “Hocus

pocus” (students) “time to focus.” This would be used to redirect students if they are getting too
loud or rowdy or do let them know its time to get serious and start working. I would also use

(Teacher) “macaroni and cheese” (students) “everybody freeze.” I would use this to get their

attention if it’s playtime and it’s time to clean up, we are transitioning from one activity to

another, or its time for new directions. Students will be instructed to raise their hands to get my

attention. During lessons students will be instructed to give a thumbs up for “I’m finished, or I

understand, and thumbs down for “I need help or I have a question”.

Line up, Hallway, Restroom Procedures

To line up students will learn a phrase to say as they line up, “1, 2 listen and do 3, 4 face the

door, 5, 6 quiet lips, 7, 8 line up straight, 9, 10 let the walking begin”. While in the hallway

students will be instructed to remain quiet in the hallways with a hand on their hip and a finger

on their lip. Students will also be instructed to keep their eyes on their neighbor in the front of

the. This will be the procedure unless students are permitted to do the sensory path in the

hallway, in which they would still be reminded to stay quiet, but they can follow the steps

required for the sensory path. Bathroom procedures boys and girls will each line up on their wall

and wait patiently until they are told to enter the stall that they’ve been directed to use. After

using the bathroom, the students will wash their hands and be reminded to wash for 20 seconds

singing either happy birthday the ABC’s all the way through before drying hands. Students will

then come back to their wall and wait patiently for everyone else to line up.

Bullying Procedures

Bullying procedures will be reviewed on the first day of school and then multiple lessons

throughout the year will pertain to bullying and the right and wrong ways to handle it. There will

be visual representations about being kind and how to handle bullying hanging in my classroom.
(Listed below) I will discuss with students that bullying can occur in many forms and that it is

when someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and continues to do it after you’ve

told them stop and that you are upset. I will give examples of bullying and then give students

examples of what is not bullying. I will tell students that if someone says or does something once

that unintentionally hurts your feelings then that is considered rude and if it’s something they’ve

said or done intentionally then that is considered mean, but if it is continuous then that is

bullying and they need to tell the teacher or an adult about what is going on. I will explain to

students that bullying can happen to anyone, anywhere, in any way, and anytime. I will tells

students that sometimes bullying can be just one person or sometimes it can be a group of

people. I will then have my students sign an anti-bullying pledge that will hang up in the room.

The pledge will that I will speak out if I see someone being bullied, report it to someone I trust,

learn what it and is not bullying, make others feel included, solve problems in peaceful ways,

and think reacting. If students are coming to me continuously with issues that are not bullying I

will review the bullying examples again, if the situation is indeed bullying I will handle it by

speaking with both children and reporting both children to the counselor to discuss the issue

further.

Rationale

My rationale for the setup of my classroom is that my students will be up and moving while they learn so they will need room
to do so throughout the day which is why we’ll have tables instead of desks. I also think the cubicle is as good idea because
I’ll allow students to decorate their space a little office space. Some of my students may have emotional or behavioral
disorders so a sensory/cool down tent can be utilized for those who need it. Some of my students may also have ADHD or
need a change of a typical chair or desk therefore bean bags are available so students to sit in throughout the day. Circle time
will be a big part of our morning, so its important students know how the routine goes and that this part of the day takes
place on the rug. Having bathrooms in the classroom is important because some students may not be physically able to use
the bathroom and may require changing and individual bathrooms will give us the appropriate privacy. I also incorporated
three bulletin boards because I love showing off students and having visual representation of what we’re focusing on each
week.
Classroom Script

Greeting Students:

Teacher: (Standing at door) Good morning (name of student) its soooo awesome to see you. Oh

don’t forget no hugs this year so we can stay safe, so how would you like to tell me good

morning? An air hug? Air five? Elbow tap? Foot tap? You choose.

Teacher and Student: (Elbow tap) Awesome go on in and unpack your bookbag. I’m so glad

you’re here to learn with me today!

Teacher and different student: Good morning (name of student) wow I love your hair today you

look so beautiful. How would you like to say good morning? (Air five) That was the bestttt air

five ever!! Go on in and unpack your bag and do our morning routine so we can have a great day

of learning!

Similar greeting for each student, they will all get to choose how to say good morning and I will

give compliments or positive and encouraging words to each student.

Bellwork:

After all students have arrived and unpacked their backpack, placed folder in cubby, told me how

they’re feeling per the “how do you feel today chart”, students will grab breakfast, raise their

hand, and wait patiently for a squirt of hand sanitizer. The classroom aide or I will sanitize

students and hand out breakfast opening things as needed. I will then turn the week’s nursey

rhyme on the smartboard for students to listen to as they eat.

Teacher: “Okay friends, what do you think this nursey rhyme is about? Do you like this nursey

rhyme? How do you think the author came up with this idea? What would the topic of your own

nursey rhyme be?”

We will have a morning discussion during breakfast just to get their brains working.

Teacher: Okay guys if you have finished your breakfast please place your trash in your breakfast

bag, put your lid on your milk, and wait patiently as we come around with the trash can and a

wipe for you to wipe your table off with. (If student cannot wipe table I or the classroom aide

will do it)

Teacher: To get started with our day someone tell me the letter of the week. What sound does

this letter make? What word do you know that starts with this letter?

Students respond and teacher verbally prompts as needed.

Teacher: Okay now someone tell me what number we’re counting to this week? Let me hear you

count.

Students count

Teacher: Wow you guys are really ready to learn this morning you are showing off all your

skills. Now, can anyone tell me what out sight word is this week? Can you spell it? Someone

sound it out for me. Does anyone know how to use this word in a sentence? (Teacher verbally

prompts as needed)

Students respond

Teacher: Okay last but not least let’s write our name and out sight word down on our lined paper.

Get into your box and get a piece of lined paper out. On the top line I want you to write your
name in the best handwriting that you have ever used I really want you to try your best and if you

need help give me a thumbs down and I’ll come around. On the second line I want you to write

our sight word for the week. Try to sound out the word if you don’t know how to spell it or as a

neighbor to help you identify the letters. You guys are so smart I can’t wait to see your finished

results.

Description of how procedures will be selected and taught.

Procedures for how my classroom will be managed will be selected and taught from my

classroom textbook and a textbook written by Richard Curwin, Allen Mendler, and Brian

Mendler called, “Discipline with Dignity: How to Build Responsibility, Relationships, and

Respect in Your Classroom.” Other procedures I had witnessed in my 5 years of working in the

school system and I have chosen the ones that seem to be most effective in a special education

classroom. These procedures will be taught and rehearsed on the first day of school and several

other times throughout the school year. We will rehearse how to line up and the phrase we say as

we line up to remind us of the correct way. We will also rehearse how we walk down the hallway

and the proper way to behave. Bathroom procedures and behaviors will be taught, modeled, and

rehearsed on the first day of school as well. As students are in the hallway, I will reinforce the

quiet lips rule and keeping your eyes on your neighbor as you walk. We will rehearse arrival and

dismissal procedures on the first day but in special education these procedures may take a week

for students to remember. I will explain our classroom rules and what is expected of my students.

We will have a discussion about why we have rules, what rewards and consequences are, and I

will reinforce this for several weeks to make sure students understand what is expected of them.

To keep the students engaged and as an incentive for them to want to behave I gave each rule a

Disney role model to follow. I will also explain bullying the procedures that are to be followed if

bullying is happening in my classroom or in the school. I will likely reinforce the bullying

procedures as students will need reassurance of the concept and use of example to ensure that it

is bullying and. I will explain the “how do you feel chart” and stress how important it is for us to

express and our feelings and some days we are going to be sad, mad, happy, or just okay. I will

explain to students that each morning as part of their unpacking and breakfast routine they will

go over and choose the face of the emotion they are feeling every morning so I can know how
they’re feeling. This could also be incentive for students to show positive and encouraging

behavior to other students if we have several sad faces. I will explain the tardy, absence, and

homework procedures and I will likely need to reinforce this several times throughout the first

few weeks of school. Several times throughout the day we will be presented the opportunity to

rehearse our classroom phrases such as the line-up phrase, macaroni and cheese everyone freeze

when its time to transition or listen for new directions, hocus pocus lets focus when It’s time to

get serious and complete work, how to raise hands when we have a question and not get up or

shout out. These phrases and classroom procedures may take a little to learn or get used to

especially in a special education classroom.
