NAIL STRUCTURE
Nail is the protective caps of the fingers and toes. It is an appendage of the
skin, with whitest and translucent in appearance, having a pinkish color of the nail
bed.

Onyx is the technical term for the nail, while onychology is the study of nail.
Onychosis is condition of the nails refers to nails diseases or disorder.

Free edge – end of the nail plate that is shaped, trimmed and cut
Nail Plate – the visible part of the nail that is attached to the nail bed
Lunula - half-moon shaped where matrix and nail bed meet, located at the base of
the nail
Cuticle – overlapping skin around the nail that is cut during manicure/pedicure

Are your nails healthy? Healthy nails are strong, intact not loose and cracked,
smooth, pinkish in color, slightly curved and unspotted. To maintain such condition,
it is advised to eat healthy foods that are rich in protein. Monitoring your nails can
help in determining the presence of any ailments or disease on your body. If you
notice that your nail color is different consult a health professional to find out the
condition.
There are factors that affect growth of nail namely: heredity, age, mental
health, activity level of the hands and weather. Our nail grow at least 1/8 inch every
month. Fingernails grow faster than the toenails.

Like the hair, nail is made up of keratin which is hardened. As a nail

technician, manicurist or pedicurist, it is necessary to have a knowledge on the
nail structure. This will serve as your guide in giving nail care service.

If you have the characteristic of a healthy nail, be happy because

it is a good sign that you are well. Practice nail hygiene because it plays an
important part in keeping one’s health.
