1. What were some of the changes in society that eventually led to
the Renaissance? Black Death, starvation, and warfare
2. How did city-states rise in Italy? Who dominated these areas?
Italy divided into several large city-states in north, various kingdoms, Papal States
south.Catholic Church, nobles,merchants, artisans dominated society in city-states.
3. Who were the Medici?Powerful banking family who controlled the city-state of
Florence during the Renaissance.
4. Why was the Renaissance considered a “rebirth”? (Use the
information from slide 6 to answer) Because people started taking an
interest in the learning of art, literature, science and learning is known as the
Renaissance.

Scholastic education gave way to classics: rhetoric, grammar, poetry, history, Latin,
Greek
6. What did it mean to be a Renaissance man/woman?
To be a person who is well educated and sophisticated and who has talent and
knowledge in many different fields of study.

He encouraged harsh treatment of citizens,and believd it was better to be widely feared
than to be greatly loved

Nicholas Copernicus said Sun was center of universe.Galileo Galilei arrested by church
officials for saying Earth orbited Sun.

painting are the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper

questions.
14. How did the Renaissance spread to Northern Italy?
Ideas were exchanged through trade, travel, and printed material, influencing the
art and ideas of the north.
15. Describe the printing press and its impact on society.
The printing press had dramatic effects on European civilization. Its immediate effect
was that it spread information quickly and accurately.
16. Describe the writings of Erasmus, Moore, and Shakespeare.
How did they help spread Renaissance ideas?
Erasmus Combined Christian ideas, humanism while Moore’s
work, Utopia,contains criticisms of English government,society Presents vision of
perfect, non-existent society based on reason. Shakespeare was the greatest writer of
Elizabethan Age.Plays helped spread ideas of Renaissance to mass audience.
17. What lasting legacy did the Renaissance leave on society?
Paintings and sculptures,printing changed society by making
more information available,writers began to use vernacular
languages to express their ideas,and a greater availability of books
prompted an increased desire for learning and a rise in literacy throughout Europe.
