Vacuum Package System
General Description
The Powerex vacuum pumps are lubri-
cated-vane vacuum pumps, which can
be used for a variety of applications.
These vacuum pumps create a suction
system, designed to remove unwanted
fluids and/or gases from the working
area. Wasted fluids are deposited into
a collection tank, and the vapors are fil-
tered through the system and then
vented into the atmosphere.
The Powerex vacuum pumps draw the Figure 1 - Vacuum pump operation

GAS BALLAST
A gas ballast device is provided on all
pumps to remove water emulsion in
the lubrication oil. The gas ballast is a
quarter turn ball valve located under
the metal shroud directly behind the
intake flange. To access the gas ballast
valve, turn the pump to OFF, remove
the two screws holding the small access
plate in place and remove the plate,
open or close the gas ballast valve as
needed, reinstall the plate, turn the
pump to ON. Figure 4 - Low oil level switch installation
Before using the gas ballast, allow the
pump to reach normal operating tem-
perature by running at a minimum of
15” of vacuum for approximately 10
minutes. Open the gas ballast valve
(see procedure in preceding para-
graph). Remove condensate from the
lubricating oil by operating the vacuum
pump for 30 minutes with
the gas ballast valve in the open posi-
tion. Close the gas ballast valve.
NOTE: When operating the pump with
highly condensable vapors, open the
intake slowly after the pump operating
temperature has been reached to avoid
excessive condensation. Do not stop Figure 5 - Low oil level switch wiring

(See Figure 11.)
LONG TERM SHUTDOWN
If the vacuum pump is to remain out of
service for an extended period of time
(3 or more months) or is not going to
be put into service until a later date,
empty the pump of oil, fill it with rust
inhibiting oil, run it for 10 minutes, and
then drain off the rust inhibiting oil.
Cover the openings with adhesive tape,
and then store the pump in a dry place.
The pump must not be stored in a
place that is damp and/or subject to
large temperature variations.
