OPENING STATEMENT

HELLO GOOD DAY, MY NAME IS JAHAZIEL C. TAYAO OF BSIT 2-1

TODAY IN THIS VIDEO, WE WILL TALK ABOUT 3 THINGS

WHAT IS BIODIVERSITY AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT?

HOW DOES THE CALAMITIES AFFECT OUR BIODIVERSITY?

AND WHAT ARE THE WAYS TO CONSERVE OUR BIODIVERSITY?

Today in this video, we are going to talk about 3 things;

First, what is biological diversity and why does it matter?
2nd, how do calamities affect our biological diversity? And,
Lastly, what are the ways our biodiversity can be preserved?

WHAT IS BIODIVERSITY AND WHY does it matter?

Biodiversity is all the different kinds of life you’ll find in one area—the variety of animals, plants,
fungi, and even microorganisms like bacteria that make up our natural world. Each of these species
and organisms work together in ecosystems, like an intricate web, to maintain balance and support
life. Biodiversity supports everything in nature that we need to survive: food, clean water, medicine,
and shelter. Biodiversity is essentially everywhere, ubiquitous on Earth’s surface and in every drop
of its bodies of water. Biodiversity plays an important role in ecosystem functions that provide
supporting, provisioning, regulating, and cultural services. These services are essential for
human well-being. This is where we can gather our needs.

How do Calamities affect our biological diversity?

Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, typhoons and natural bush fires all affect the many
different ecosystems on our planet. Initially, these disasters negatively affect the biodiversity of
wetlands, forests and coastal systems by causing the spread of invasive species, mass species
mortality and loss of habitat. In the short term, select ecosystem degradation reduces the ability of
forests to sequester carbon, which exacerbates climate change. Over time though, many types of
natural disasters play an integral role in rejuvenating the very ecosystem that they once destroyed.

We're going to tackle some of them

For example, the eruption of taal volcano in January 2020 and subsequent lava flow has an
immediate negative effect on surrounding ecosystems, but through the process of primary succession,
the forest habitat begins the process of re-colonization almost immediately. Many plants in the form
of seeds and spores and animal species, particularly insect life such as crickets and spiders, arrive
from adjacent areas to take up residence. These life forms are specifically adapted to survive in the
severe conditions following a lava flow and spearhead the succession process. The progeny of these
pioneer species change the original sterile conditions to the point where a new and normally more
diverse forest ecosystem has developed within a 150 year period. The effects of the ashes due to this
eruption spewed across Calabarzon, Metro Manila, some parts of Central Luzon and Ilocos region.
39 people reportedly died due to volcanic eruption and about P3.06 billion worth of crops were
damaged and about 27.22 square km or 2722 hectares of land were covered in ashes and will not be
able to grow crops or any plants. 1967 animals died and about 15,000 metric tons of fishes were lost.
Another calamity that we mostly faced here in the Philippines is typhoon.
Typhoon Ulysses’ damage and losses to the agriculture sector grew to P12.8 billion, from the
previously reported P4 billion, due to production losses at farm commodities like rice, corn, high-
value crops, among others.
This is according to Department of Agriculture (DA) Spokesperson Noel Reyes, who refused to
comment on the latest damage report of National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council
(NDRRMC), which was issued on Thursday (November 26) that specified that Ulysses incurred
P540-billion worth of damages to agriculture sector.  Biodiversity were affected by this because the
primary sources of our food were flooded. There are vast area of land that were unable to grow crops
or been damaged by the typhoon. That results to higher demand and higher price. Cagayan and
Central Luzon were the most affected parts of Philippines. And we all know that these regions are
mostly relying on agricultural lands.

With all that information, what are the ways we can do to preserve our biodiversity?

First of all, we need to be responsible for our actions. We need to plant more trees. The main reason
why the typhoons nowadays were too powerful is because the forests and the mountains that serves
as our shields on those calamities were destroyed by us. The quarrying and illegal loggings made the
floods more powerful. We are the one who destroy our natural shield. The growing demand on
wildlife, woods and forests products leads to over hunting and overuse of our ecosystem stocks that
concludes to biodiversity losses. The main objective of this video is to raise public awareness to all
that if we don’t stop to overuse our nature, we will loss the biodiversity we have today. Nature helps
us to combat global warming and climate change. It absorbs the deadly gasses we produce and turns
this to breathable air. It also mitigates natural disasters, if we have healthy ecosystem, we will suffer
less when natural disasters occur. So as a responsible citizen on earth, we must act now to conserve
our biodiversity. Don’t wait for the time that because of our greed, the rich resources that our country
have, will be gone.

It’s our duty to protect nature’s beauty. It’s our duty to protect the beauty of nature. mas okay
