nurses regarding use of restraints jn children with selected
demographic variables.

6.4. HYPOTHESIS:

H1- There will be significant difference between pre and post test
knowledge and practice scores of nurses regarding use of restraints in
children

H2- There will be significant association between pre test knowledge


scores and demographic variables.

6.5. RESEARCH VARIABLES:

Independent Variables: Structured teaching programme regarding use


of restraints in children.

Dependent Variables: Knowledge of staff nurses regarding use of


restraints in children.

6.6. OPERATIONAL DEFINITIONS:


Knowledge: Refers to correct response of nurses regarding use of
restraints as elicited by structured knowledge questionnaire.

Restraints: Refers to the appliances which are used by staff nurses in


order to ensure safety of a hospitalized child by means of restricting
child's movement, activity or normal access to her/his body, such as
elbow restraints, mummy restraints. -Jacket restraints, crib with dome
restraints, mitten's restraints. clove hitch restraints,

Effectiveness: Refers to gain in knowledge and improvement in skills as


determined by difference between pre and post test knowledge scores
and observation checklist scores.

Structured Teaching Programme: Refers to instructional methods such as


lecture cum demonstration and teaching aids such as charts, posters,
models, designed for nurses to provide information regarding use of
restraints in children.

Nurses: Refers to an individual who is qualified as registered nurse with


the qualification of GNM, BSc (N). PC BSc (N) and who are working in
selected pediatric hospitals.
6.7. ASSUMPTIONS:

6.7.1 Nurses may have some knowledge regarding the use of physical
restraints.
6.7.2 Nurses may have interest to improve knowledge in depth about use
of physical restraints.

6.8. DELIMITATIONS.
The study is delimited to nurses working in selected pediatric hospitals.
Jaipur.

7.0. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

7.1 . Sources of Data:


Nurses working in selected pediatric hospitals in Jaipur,

Pre Experimental: One group pretest posttest Design.

Study will be conducted in selected pediatric hospitals, Jaipur,

The population of this study comprises of nurses working in pediatric
hospitals.

7.2.5. Sample Size:


The sample size consists of 60 staff nurses,
7.2.6. Sampling technique:
Purposive sampling technique.

7.2.7. SAMPLING CRITERIA:

Inclusion Criteria:

• Nurses who are willing to participate in the study.


• Nurses who are available during the period of Data collection.

Exclusion Criteria:

1) Nurses who have undergone in-service education regarding use of


physical restraints.
