TASK 4: HYDRAULICS AND ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONS OF

GEOSYNTEHTICS
Instructions:
1. Answer the following questions.
2. Submit answers in the classroom in pdf format.
3. Submit answers as per scheduled due date.

Q4.1. List the advantages of a geosynthetic filter over the graded granular filter.

Q4.2. It is a misconception that the geosynthetic filter can replace the function of a granular filter
completely. Do you agree with this statement? Justify your answer.

Q4.3. What are the essential properties of soil to be determined for the successful use of a
geotextile in the filtration application?

Q4.4. Define the following phenomena: ‘blocking’, ‘blinding’ and ‘clogging’.

Q4.5. Blinding of the geosynthetic filter is far more detrimental than its clogging. Why?

Q4.6. What is the soil-tightness number? Explain its significance.

Q4.7. What are the main conditions known where soils are likely to cause excessive clogging of
geotextiles? In such instances, what is the logical recommendation?

Q4.8. A geotextile-wrapped trench drain is to be constructed to drain a soil mass. Determine the
appropriate hydraulic properties of the geotextile to function as a filter in a non-critical
application with the following soil properties:

Cu = 2.5
D15 = 0.15 mm
D85 = 0.7 mm
ks = 1 × 10−5 m/s
Percentage passing 75 µm = 7%

Q4.9. A geosynthetic has to be selected to provide drainage behind a retaining wall with a
vertical backface. The estimated vertical flow into the drain is 0.0018 m3/s. Determine the
required transmissivity of the geosynthetic. Would an ordinary single layer of nonwoven
geotextile be adequate?

Q3.10. Write everything you have learned from this module. There is no specific format, just
simply state and expound.
