Centre distance

The input of the centre distance is considered or required in the following cases:

Specification Significance

a Calculation and division of the Profile shifting factors at given centre distance.
x1, a Determination of the sum of profile shifting and profile shift factor x2.
x2, a Determination of the sum of profile shifting and profile shift factor x1.
x1, x2 Determination of the centre distance.

Null-Gear Pairs
In the case of Null-gear Pairs, both profile shifting factors are set equal to zero. The centre
distance is equal to the zero-centre distance and the pressure angle at pitch cylinder
𝛼𝛼𝑤𝑤𝑤𝑤 corresponds to the normal pressure angle 𝛼𝛼𝑛𝑛 . The centre distance is calculated as follows:

1 2𝑧𝑧 +𝑧𝑧
𝑎𝑎𝑑𝑑 = 𝑚𝑚𝑛𝑛 ∗ 2∗cos(𝛽𝛽)

(𝑚𝑚𝑛𝑛 – Normal module, 𝑧𝑧1 + 𝑧𝑧2 – Number of teeth Pinion/gear, β – Helical angle)

V-Null Gear Pairs

In the case of V-Null Gears Pairs, the sum of the profile shifting factors is equal to zero and thus
x1=-x2. The centre distance is defined as the zero-centre distance ad (calculation: see Null-Gear
Pairs) with 𝛼𝛼𝑤𝑤𝑤𝑤 = 𝛼𝛼𝑛𝑛 .

V-Gear Pairs
In the case of V-Gear Pairs, both gears have different profile shifting factors and thus the sum is
not equal to zero. The centre distance a is therefore greater than or less than the zero-centre
distance, usually a>ad.
cos 𝛼𝛼𝑡𝑡
𝑎𝑎 = 𝑎𝑎𝑑𝑑 ∗ cos 𝛼𝛼𝑤𝑤𝑤𝑤

(ad – zero-centre distance, 𝛼𝛼𝑡𝑡 – transverse pressure angle, 𝛼𝛼𝑤𝑤𝑤𝑤 – pressure angle at pitch
cylinder)
