WORK, ENERGY AND POWER

Solve the following problems correctly. Show your solutions

1. Richardson pulls a toy 3.0 m across the floor by a string, applying a force of 0.50 N.
During the first meter, the strings is parallel to the floor. In the next two meters, the strings
make an angle of 30°. With the horizontal direction. What is the total amount of work done
by Richardson on the toy?

2. Marissa is out with her friends. Misfortune occurs and Marissa and her friends find
themselves getting a workout. They apply a cumulative force of 2080 N to push the car 218
m to the nearest fuel station. Determine the work done on the car.

3. A force of 15 N is exerted to move a trolley at a constant speed to a distance of 5m on a

level road. How much work is done if the force is applied:
a. horizontally?
b. at an angle of 30° with the horizontal?
c. at an angle of 45 ° with the horizontal?

4. An object has a mass of 5 kg. Calculate the potential energy 3 m above the ground.

5. Calculate the kinetic energy of a 1500-kg car travelling at 80 km/hr.

6. A 25-kg boulder falls from the top of cliff 80 m high above the ground. Find the PE and
KE of the stones until it is 30 m above the ground.

7. A crane lifts a 1650-kg load of scrap metals to a distance of 17.5 m in 23 s. How much
power is used in delivering the load?

8. A pump lifts 36kg of water to a height of 12 m every second. What is the output power?

9. An escalator is used to move 20 passengers every minute from the first floor of a
department store to the second. The second floor is located 5.20 meters above the first floor.
The average passenger's mass is 54.9 kg. Determine the power requirement of the escalator in
order to move this number of passengers in this amount of time.

10. During the Teen Power Competition, Maria and Mary ran up the hill. Maria is twice as
massive as Mary. Yet Mary ascended the same distance in half time Maria did. Who
expended more work? Who is more powerful? Explain your answers.
