WORK AND

POWER
When do we consider that we did a
work?
There’s a work when:
1. there is a force acting on the object;
2. the object has to move a certain distance called
the displacement;
3. there must be a component of the force in the
direction of motion.
WORK
Is a method of energy transfer. You transfer
energy to an object by doing work on it.
The work is defined as the product of force
and distance.
W = Fd ( horizontal direction)

W = F *d* cos q ( angular)

W = F • d • cos(theta)

W = mgh ( vertical direction)

The SI unit for work is N-m or kg m2/s2 or
Joule (J) named after James Prescott Joule.
Example:
Girlie pushes the table horizontally applying a force of 25 N to a certain distance of 3.2 meter. How
much is the work done by Girlie?
Given :
F= 25 N
d= 3.2m
Formula:
W= Fd
W= (25N)(3.2m)
W= 80 N m or 80 J
Example:
Rachel found a 2kg book on the floor and lift it
0.75 meters and put it on a table. How much is
the work done by Rachel?
Joy is playing a toy train. She pushes the train with a force
of 10N and is moved 2m forward as before. If the train is
still moving directly forward (that is, horizontally), the
angle between the force vector and the train's motion
is 60o. Compute for its work.

Given: formula: solution:

F = 10N W= F *d* cos q w= 10N* 2m* cos(60o )
D = 2m = 10* 2*0.5
= 10 J
Power
Power is a rate at which work is done, or energy
is used. It is equal to the amount of work done
divided by the time it takes to do the work. The
unit of power is the Watt (W), which is equal to
a Joule per second (J/s).

P= W/t
It is measured in terms of Joules per sec. (J/s)
or watts (W)
1 Joules = 1 watt

1000 W = 1kW

1horsepower (hp) = 764 watts

1 hp = 550 ft/lbs
Example:

A small motor does 3800J in 25

seconds. How much is the
power done of the motor?

top of a building requires 950000 J of work.
