Chemistry Activity: Determining the Change in Boiling Point When

Coffee is Dissolved in Water

Objectives: To determine the difference in boiling points when coffee is dissolved in water

Materials:

 Hot Plate
 A Beaker
 50 mL of water
 Thermometer
 1 tsp of Coffee
Procedure:
1. Take approximately 50 mL of water in the beaker.
2. Place the beaker on the hot plate, heat it up and put 1 tsp of coffee.
3. Mix the coffee until it is fully dissolved.
4. Note the temperature at which the water begins to boil.
5. Take five readings in all (every thirty seconds for two and a half minutes) and take the average to find
the boiling point.
Data and Observation:

Boiling point
100.8 C
101.2 C
101.5 C
101.5 C
101.5 C
Observation
The coffee solution boils at a higher temperature than pure water.
Conclusion:
The addition of a solute to water increases its boiling point.
