Point
•A dot or point that establishes a position and acts a visual focus
•A single point immediately attracts and focuses the eye
Line
•Created by connecting two or more points
•Creates an illusion of distance, space and depth
•Can be straight, curved, heavy, slim, dashed or dotted
•Used to divide a space, direct the eye to a direction, outline different figures
•The simplicity, complexity, elegance, form of line, outline of the exterior edges of a shape is called
contour
Space (Or Area)
•The surface that acts a visual container, drawing attention to other visual elements in a layout
•Graphics designers use it as a means of defining the format and proportion in a layout
•Empty or white spaces can create spatial energy within a design and directs the eye from one part to
another
Shape
•Combination of lines, points and space (2D or 3D)
•Used in drawing to represent real object, symbolize abstracts thought, or define artistic design
•Three basic types of shape
-geometric (triangle, square, rectangle, circle)
-natural (formed from natural things)
-abstract (icons, stylised figures, graphics illustrations)
•circle- Infinity, harmony, community, completeness, perfection, protection and endurance
•rectangle- security and stability, strong market position, strong character, firmness, protection and
tradition
•triangle- dynamic tension, aggression, energy, stability, progression, direction
Color
•All color comes from pure light
•Produced by any object that reflects light
•Computer monitor is one source of artificial light
•Produce dynamic changes in a design when used to emphasize things or image
•Properties of color
-hue (primary color)
-secondary hue (secondary color)
-Tertiary hue (tertiary color)
•Color Wheel
-Red -Green
-Red Orange -Blue Green
-Orange -Blue
-Yellow Orange -Blue violet
-Yellow -Violet
-Yellow Green -Red Violet
Size
•Refers to how large or small something is in a document
•Makes the layout more attractive and organized
•Displays what is the most important, attracts attention, helps to fill the layout together
•Establishes a consistent look throughout a printed publication or web page document
Texture
•The look or feel of a surface
•Creates illusion on a printed materials
•printed pattern are visual texture
•Tactile texture can be felt physically
Balance
•Equal distribution of weight, in design, applies to visual weight
•Describe the placement of elements, shapes or lines in the image, should be evenly distributed on the
screen
•Two types
-Symmetrical or Formal balance- even distribution of elements in a design
-Asymmetrical or Informal balance-uneven arrangement of elements much that one side of the design
has more weight
Contrast
•Placement of heavy and light elements within a page
•The larger, darker elements appear heavier in the design than smaller and lighter elements
•The roughness or smoothness of things in a layout
Emphasis
•Distribution of heavy and light elements
•Determines the elements in a design which are focused on the most and less given attention at
Rhythm
•Repetition of one or more elements
•Creates mood and sense of movement
•Variety of rhythm makes a design more exciting
Unity
•Feeling of harmony created by all parts and elements of a design
•A sense of completeness can be left from the work
Pixel
•Picture component or picture elements
•Smallest component of a bitmap graphics composed of single colored square
•Each pixel characterizes a color or a shade
Gif
•Graphics Interchange Format
•Most usable file format for the web
•First file format supported by web browsers
PNG
•Portable Network Graphics
•A compressed file format more often used for web
•Represent images with a transparency effect that allows images to overlap, unlike a jpg or gif that
cover one another
JPG or JPEG
•Joint Photographic Experts Group
•Standard file format known to many
•Compressed high quality static color images for the easy transfer of files between print, media and the
web called “lossy” compression (real image is lost as the file size reduced)
Adobe Creativesutte
•Inclusion Adobe Photoshop in its bundle, can be availed individually for a price
GIMP
•Free desktop editing application, users interface is nimilar with Adobe Photoshop, open source
application, lacks the polish and quality build
Pixlr Anad
•Supported online image editing tool, pixlr editor and pixlr Express
