Learning activity 4

Evidence: My presentation outline

A. Find a topic of personal interest. Imagine you are going to present that topic
orally to your teacher and classmates at school. For this part of the evidence
you need to carry out exhaustive research in order to be able to present all the
necessary information related to your selected topic. Report the most important
aspects of your research through a brainstorm of the ideas and concepts that
you think will be relevant to the presentation.

Brainstorm

Example of topic: Aviation.

 Aviation refers to the use of commercial and non-commercial aircrafts

for transportation of people or goods.

 The A380, manufactured by the Airbus Industry, is the biggest plane

ever made.

Brainstorm

Topic: The light bulb

 It is undoubtedly one of the most important inventions in the

history of mankind, perhaps only surpassed by the wheel.
 The light bulb is one of the inventions that revolutionized
history, but the authorship of its invention remains
controversial.
 The light bulb, there is no doubt, was a brilliant idea. But like
almost all the inventions of man, it emerged as a mixture of
chance, luck, curiosity and a lot of inventiveness. The creator
of this incandescent lamp was the American inventor Thomas
Alva Edison.
B. Now, structure your presentation using the Signpost language learnt during this
learning activity. Present your outline through presentation cards. Use as many
cards as you need.

Remember: Each presentation card should include a

heading, a phrase at the bottom, a number and it should be
organized by numbering and bulleting.

Structure: I’m going to divide this talk into five parts.

1. Early beginnings.
2. Civil aviation.
3. Commercial aviation.
4. Modern aircrafts manufacturers:
a. Airbus.
b. Boeing.
c. Embraer.
5. The most famous aircrafts in history:
a. Concorde.
b. Boeing 747.
c. Airbus A380.

Let’s turn now to the first part: the early beginnings

Solution
The light bulb

Structure: I’m going to divide this talk into four parts.

1. Definition.
2. Origin.
3. Inventor.
4. Kinds of bulbs.

Now let's move on to the first part: definition of the

light bulb
[Bottom phrase]

Let’s begin

1. Definition

Also called a focus, it is a glass cylinder widening at

one of its ends. Inside it has fine tungsten or tungsten
filaments that, with the passage of current, become
incandescent, generating light.
Let’s turn now to

2. Origin

More than a century has passed since Thomas Alva

Edison patented the incandescent lamp. This simple
invention that consists of heating a filament to red-white
through the circulation of electricity, changed the world.

On October 21, 1879, Edison made the first public

demonstration of the incandescent light bulb before
three thousand people gathered in Menlo Park. That
first light bulb lit for 48 hours uninterrupted.

Ask any child who invented the light bulb and the
answer will probably be: "Thomas Edison." Contrary to
what schoolchildren have been taught for so many
years, American icon Thomas Edison did not invent the
light bulb, nor did he file the first patent for the modern
incandescent lamp design.

In reality, light bulbs, used as electric lights, existed 50

years before the patent filed by Thomas Edison in
1879. In fact, Edison lost the rights to the patent for the
light bulb in both Great Britain and the United States.
Now we’ll move on to

3. Inventor

The creator of this incandescent lamp was the

American inventor Thomas Alva Edison.

He patented over a thousand inventions and built the

first invention factory. It was a building specially created
to "invent inventions" and put them to work. Of all those
he did, Edison was particularly proud of the
phonograph.

Lastly
4. Kinds of bulbs.

Halogen bulbs: The main advantage they present is

their longer duration, reaching up to 3000 hours. The
color of the light emitted brightens the rooms more
realistically. These types of bulbs accept different
working voltages thus providing a great variety of
lighting intensities.

Fluorescent bulbs: These are the bulbs with the

lowest consumption and the longest duration, being
able to reach 10,000 hours. Its price is much higher, but
it is more than compensated by the savings in
electricity, up to 80%, and its useful life.
C. To complete the evidence, you must now write a complete list of references
using the guidelines given by the American Psychological Association (APA). Do
not forget to organize your references alphabetically.
