Mapping Scale

Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to continue working on using a scale on a map to find
the distance in real life.

Outcomes:
5.S.3- use the scale on maps and globes to determine the distance between places
4.S.3- use the scale on maps of Alberta to determine the distance between places

I can:
Answer questions about the distance between 2 places using a variety of maps

Prep:
Copy maps of Alberta and questions about distance between places

Set: Show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzncwjKrz5Y

Lesson: Demonstrate practice for the class, using several maps and scales to show a variety.
Show students how to use a bar scale.

Activity:
Students work on scale questions. Higher learners can help lower learners, and I will work one-
on-one with students who need help.
Use atlases to find the distance between different places.

Assessment:
Take in scale practice. Assess if the concept needs to be retaught.

Explain what longitude and latitude are and what they are used for
Find the absolute location of places in Canada

Prep:
Copy longitude/latitude practice sheets

Set:
Show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTrsvGytGG0

Lesson:
Demonstrate how we can use longitude and latitude to find absolute locations. Demonstrate
how to write these values.

Activity:
Students work on worksheet as a class.
Student group up with atlases and find a variety of coordinates that we decide in class.

Longitude and Latitude

- Longitude and latitude are imaginary lines that help us find the location of places around the
world.
- Lines of longitude run North to South, and lines of latitude run East to West.
- We can know the absolute location of a place by looking at where the lines meet, and writing
that as a set of numbers known as coordinates.
- The equator is the middle line around the Earth, running East to West
- The prime meridian is the other middle line around the Earth, running North to South
