Lesson objective(s):
Analyze The Road Not Taken, Since Hannah Moved Away, and How to Paint a Donkey to summarize
the poems.
Analyze how Robert Frost, Judith Viorst and Naomi Shihab Nye portray the themes of their poems.
ENGAGEMENT
I will go over Since Hannah Moved Away and How to Paint a Donkey with the students. I’ll lead the
class in a discussion on summarizing a poem. Students will write down their summaries on their
“Theme” worksheet. Then, ask the students to raise their hands if they heard any words stand out,
circling the words from the poem on the Smartboard as the students say them. I will ask questions
such as why do they think the author chose those words specifically?
We will discuss what the characters in both poems had to go through and how it affected them
emotionally or how they reacted to what was happening to them.
EXPLORATION
After I explain that the theme is the message the poem is teaching the students will discuss with their
seat partner about what they think the theme of Since Hannah Moved Away and How to Paint a
Donkey. I will walk around and check on group discussions, then tell what the theme is in their words.
EXPLANATION

literature.
Where else can themes be found besides poetry? Discuss that most literature have a theme to find.
How do the characters reactions to an event in a poem affect the power of it? Do poems have more
effect on you when they make you feel strong emotions?
ELABORATION
An activity will conclude the lesson. Students will be given one poster board for their desk groups, a
pile of markers and each a copy of The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. Students will collaborate to
summarize the poem and determine a theme. Students will write their answers on their poster board.
Students will also discuss their thoughts on how the character reflects on which road to take and why
they might’ve been conflicted when deciding which was right for them.
They will work together to get a better understanding of the concepts without much of my help, unless
they need it. The posters will be collected before they are presented to ensure that no group adds to
their posters when they hear their peers present.
Theme, main ideas and summaries are vocabulary terms they will use.
They will use this in their everyday lives when they future their education or go into careers because
they’ll have to read texts and be able to know what was being said or to summarize it and tell
someone else.
EVALUATION
The students will present their posters to the class and we will discuss whether the summaries and
themes make sense.
