Instruction: Name at least 5 significant learnings you have from our lessons since Unit 1
to Unit 4 of our subject SS114 Philippine Popular Culture. Be able to discuss each of these
learnings you have enumerated.

From our subject SS114 – Philippine Popular Culture, my significant learnings are as
follows:

1. First, culture. What is culture? Culture is a term that refers to a large and diverse set of
mostly intangible aspects of social life. According to sociologists, culture consists of the
values, beliefs, systems of language, communication, and practices that are common I
their society. Culture also includes the objects that are commonly seen in that group or
society. Culture is unique from social structure and economic aspects of society, but it is
connected to them.

2. Second is that there are different characteristics of culture. These are:

Culture is shared. As member of a society, we share culture with other
members of our society.
Culture is learned. We learn culture from families, peers, institutions, and
media.
Culture is dynamic. This simply means that cultures interact and change.
Culture is symbolic. A symbol is something that stands for something else.
For example, language, money and art.
Culture is integrated. All aspects of a culture are related to one another.

3. Third is all about popculture. Popculture or popular culture are shared experiences
enjoyed by the masses. This includes any elements of culture that are recognized by most
people in a nation and can also exist in global level. Examples are movies, music, sports,
food, entertainment, celebrities and products. There are also different sources of popular
culture. We have print culture, radio culture, films and cinemas, television program, social
media and many more.

4. Next is the popular culture in our country. Mass media-generated culture in the
Philippines is what can be properly called popular culture. There are komiks, films, books,
music, and food. We also have our own styles and designs here in the Philippines. Popular
culture comes and goes along with the shifting of activities and beliefs. But thanks to
social media, people are always updated with the most recent trend.

5. Lastly is the Filipino popculture in social, economic and political contexts. Films are
subcategorized by language and industry within the Philippines. These films are by
audience, by genre, by language, by setting, by studio, by subject, by technology, by
topic, by type, by Filipino directors, etc. Also the P-pop which started 2019, went through
a huge transformation in its increased quality, budget, investment and variety, matching
the country’s fast economic growth. There Filipino brands of clothing which sells
internationally which contributes to the country’s economy.
