Objectives:
- Get the client’s problem(s) off their chest
- Building rapport
- Affirming client’s strengths
Things to take note of:
- Avoid solving client’s problems for them! This is to avoid them being overly reliant on
worker in the future
- Emphasize on collaboration! “I will do my best to try and lessen your burden, but you
will also need to do your part in helping yourself”
- Trust the client! Every human being has the potential and capability to help
themselves. “What do you think you can do to work towards that goal?”
What to do:
1) Find out client’s issues
“Where would you like to start?”, “Please tell me what is concerning you?”,
2) Summarize
“You’ve given me some idea of why you have come. Now since time is limited, I
wonder if together, we can select a specific situation within your problem that we can
work on. I will help you understand the situation more fully and then we can examine
strategies for dealing better with it. Is that okay with you?”
3) Find out client’s goals/objectives of coming
“Where do you want to go from here?”, “By coming here, what do you hope to
achieve?”
o Generate and explore options to attain them: “What do you think you can do
to achieve this?” “Given your goals, what are the ways you think you can
attain them?”
o Develop action plans
Skills to be utilized:
Home visit
Objectives:
- Observe the home environment (safety and conduciveness, appropriateness of
furnishing)
- Observe family dynamics (family belief system, organizational patterns,
communication processes, strengths, growth areas)
- (if incomplete) Discuss care plan
What to do:
1) Explain why we need to do up a care plan
“As a part of financial assessment, and as a part of the work that we do here at the
FSC is case management, where we identify areas where you would want to work
on”
2) Confirm areas where client would like to work on
“What are the issues that you would like to work on?” “What are the issues that you
think is stopping you from being self-reliant?” “Imagine a time when things were
better, what would be different?”
3) “Along the way if you find that you have other issues or areas that you want to work
on, go ahead and raise it up to me.”

Objectives:
- Check on the progress of the client (refer to care plan if needed)
- Follow up on any issues
- Any other concerns
Skills to be utilized:
Strengths check
- Good for clients who view themselves limited and lack resources necessary to
make changes in their lives
- Enable them to see concretely the possibility of achieving their goals
- A way to also observe where client thinks that they are lacking (weaknesses)
- Use them to tackle presenting issues and avoid client dependency
