HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Future proofing

Typical lifetime expectancy for a tank

lining is in excess of 10 years.

In that time many things can change,

and we cannot predict the future.

But we can estimate trends, such as

the increasing temperature of crude
oil and provide appropriate solutions
to the arising challenges.

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Most Common challenge in the industry

Time and Accessibility!

 A coating system with extended lifetime is an advantage.

 Costly to take out a tank out of service for maintenance.

HPI Concept / 2015

Life Cycle Cost a Philosophy

Getting the correct perspective….

Your name / presentation name / date

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

What is Life Cycle Cost?

Simply said Life Cycle Cost is the sum of the cost of the painting
job divided by the lifetime of the structure (years)

Sum of the cost:

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

What is the cost of Painting?

• Typical New construction 1% of the total project cost is Paint

itself

• Paint, Labour, preparation etc., is 2.5% of total project cost

• Since we talk enormous investments in todays’ plant, this is

still substantial money – but what does it mean for the
future?

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Simplest Perspective of Life Cycle Cost

Cost of Painting including

Preparation staging etc., + the
same for every maintenance
period throughout the
structures life divided by
lifetime of the structure

Result is the better the process at the beginning the less maintenance
Thus average cost per year is reduced with better practices

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

The REAL needs and value of protective coatings:

ASSET Performance & Life Cycle Costs (LCC)

Coatings hugely impact asset performance and LCC, while accounting for a fraction of
costs.

HPI Concept / 2015

51
PERFORMANCE COATINGS

LCC: When painting a structure we are facing

two options:

A. Carry out work at a minimum

investment cost - will imply:
i. Extended maintenance in remaining
lifetime
ii. Let the structure corrode: Replace
units at breakdown

B. Invest at the new-building stage,

to save money later - will imply:
i. High quality paints and pre-treatment
ii. Reduce required maintenance with
time

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

What makes a good paint system

ISO 12944 / 20340 gives guidelines for paint systems in various

environments based on testing criteria for various lifespans

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Is this the real Life Cycle Cost?

• Well yes and no

– We get a proper idea of actual costs for the job itself
– We have forgotten a critical issue
• Out of service costs
– Lost production
– Possible penalties
• Refinery could be 500 K USD – 2 M USD per 24 hours in lost
revenue with possible knock on effect

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Live-line Maintenance

• A key economical decision would be to go for coatings that

allow live-line application
• Application possible on site while operation is live:
no need to shutdown = cost saving
 Epoxy HR (150C)
 Jotatemp 650 (400c)
 And more…

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Live-line Maintenance: Care must be taken…

 Follow the rules of the plant; safety comes first and common
sense backs up all rules

 Use protective clothing including cotton covers on all bare

skin to avoid accidental burns if in contact with high
temperatures

 Follow specific product guides i.e., Joatatemp 650 hot

application guide
HPI Concept / 2015
PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Live-line Maintenance: Care must be taken…

 Brushes / Rollers shall resist solvents and heat required

 Keep pressures & distance low if applying by spray – practice

first is advised as time is critical when carrying out the work

If Live-line maintenance is not possible try taking advantage

of a plant turnaround

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Taking advantage of a plant Turnaround

A turnaround is a planned, periodic shut down of a plant unit to:

 perform maintenance/renovation operations

 inspect, test and replace process equipment

 SPEED is critical

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Solving the SPEED issue

• Fast coating processes can be solved by:

– Optimised surface cleaning / preparation

– Fewer coats / Single Coat Application
– Fast dry / Cure

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Optimised Surface Preparation / Cleaning

• Water Blasting
– Cleans and prepares and
feathers edges
– Creates a lot of water
• Contamination
• Drying
• Grit Blasting
– Fast
– Creates dust
– Best Profile and performance
• Hand Tool preparation
– Slow but can be done with
other trades

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

One Coat Solution

• Can be effective and can be fast

– Watch out for uneven film build

• Stripe coating is required

– Avoid low dft

• Thickness is critical
– Too low and holidays are more prevelent
– Touch up all low areas and holidays

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Solvent Free Tank Linings for Storage

• Solvent free is today’s
requirement for storage tank
linings
• Why?
– Health and Safety
– Improved performance

• However they are not normally

easy to use
• Highly viscous
– Need to be warm
– Or two component spray
equipment to be used

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Tankguard SF – next generation tank lining

Three things to consider

1. Chemical resistance means tolerance over long time periods

to immersion
2. Easy to apply means standard airless spray equipment &
reasonable lengths of hoses
3. Health and Safety means
– Low VOC
– Low risk of explosion

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

What does this mean in practice

• Hose length on a Large pump (60:1) can be longer

– With control and professional applicators 30-60 meter
hoses can be used
– 30 minutes at 23°C
– Alt., 2 applicators per pump

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS

Viscosity vs Practical Application

Viscosity Comparison in cP
• Low viscosity means easier
application
• If viscosity increases quickly
– Pot-life is short
• Reduced pot-life means more
stoppages
• Results in slow application
– Cleaning equipment
– Discarding hoses etc…
• The graph shows the normal
solvent free reaching pot-life
between 30 to 35 minutes

HPI Concept / 2015

PERFORMANCE COATINGS
