Advantages of in Situ Leaching
Advantages of in Situ Leaching
ISL mining has many advantages over conventional mining. It is the most
suitable method for low grade ores. The deposits which were not feasible by
conventional mining due to competitive prices of uranium in 1980s were exploited
successfully by ISL technique. In-situ leaching gains popularity due to successful
exploitation of low grade ore deposits, at lower production cost. Many new projects
for uranium in-situ leaching are being planned at present. Following are enlisted the
other advantages of this technology
The low cost method i.e. economical
The reduced hazards for the employees from accidents
No need for large uranium mill tailings deposits
Little surface disturbance
Faster and simpler development
No processing of ore on the surface
Simpler decommissioning, remediation and re-cultivation process
Lower capital and operating costs
Shorter lead times for mine development
Much smaller workforce required
More flexible mine planning and quicker ramp-up in response to market
improvements
Inherently safer working environment
Limited environmental impacts
No waste rock
No tailings
No ore dust or direct ore exposure
Lower consumption of water
Economic recovery of low grade ores (increases resource utilization).
