TOP 5 STUDY HACKS

YOUR REVIEW HABITS FOR THE ENGINEERING BOARD EXAMS

Yow! I’m your new Kuya Engr. Adrian!

And in this short book I will give you some secrets I used to survive the
Engineering Board Exams!

Email mo lang ako kung meron kang tanong, kwento, na gusto i-share :)

Here’s my email adrian@engrstateofmindph.com

Just a quick background, I graduated 2015 at Polytechnic University of the

Philippines Sta. Mesa Manila.

BS Electrical Engineering and I live at Pasig City and currently working as an

Electrical Engineer OFW at Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

Just like you now, isa din akong engineering graduate na minsang nangarap
makapasa sa board exam,

Kaya ako ay narito at handang tumulong sa mga kapwa ko future engineers :)

Now let’s begin a whole new way of looking at the way you review!

1
HOW YOUR MIND WORKS

In the next 4 to 5 months of your REVIEW PERIOD you will undergo

intense study sessions and several hours studying alone, with a group, or
in a review center. You can drastically improve the way you absorb
information like a sponge if you know the style you learn the most.

Have you ever wondered why some learning activities work well for you?
And there are others that are not? Some people love classes, others enjoy
listening to audio books and others can’t get enough of writing and note-
taking.

Depending on your learning style, some activities and materials will

naturally and easily work well for you, whereas others might still be
usable if you adapt them;

2
AUDITORY (SOUND)
Auditory learners learn by listening. They learn well in
classrooms, listening to teachers talk or by watching
talks or speeches, or listening to podcasts. When
learning alone or revising you may find that talking
helps or you may even record yourself summarizing
some notes and play it back to yourself later.

3
VISUAL (SIGHT)
Visual learners learn by seeing. They might like
information presented in charts or diagrams, using
written information or watching a demonstration.
When you self-study or revise you might use
diagrams, mind-maps or written notes
that are highlighted or colour-coded.

4
KINAESTHETIC (FEEL)
Kinaesthetic (or kinaesthetic) learners learn by doing. Movement and
touching or interacting with what you are trying to learn works best for
you. Tracing out words as you say them or walking while listening to
audio can help to take in the information.

By knowing your dominant style of learning, you can focus on it and

start feeling productive and do more in such short period of time!

ENROLL IN A REVIEW CENTER

Nope, this is not a promotion and I am not promoting any review centers
out there. There are many review centers that offers great packages but
has its own pros and cons and you are the one who will decide. Just
consider the location, review schedule, and the background and past
performances and the passing rate before you decide to enroll.

You must be hands-on in the selection phase because I am telling you the
enrolment fee is not that cheap. In case of enrollment fee, in my case, I
live in Pasig City and back in 2015, the City Government has a Program
which supports Board Exam takers and provide financial support in the
preparation for the review.

I received Php 10,000.00 cash during that time and is a big help to pay for
my review expenses. Go check out your local city hall for such programs!

BENEFITS OF ENROLLING IN A
REVIEW CENTER

ACTUAL BOARD EXAM QUESTIONS

The professors that will teach you are experts. No amount can equal
the knowledge they are about to give you. They are the masters of
creating board exam passers. They have a clue
in what question will have a high probability to appear in your actual
exam!

The years of experience they acquired for teaching examinees like you
will benefit you in a huge way because they have been not into one but
countless board exams through their career.

Surely, they will give you pointers to review but the actual experience
will be a large factor.

BENEFITS OF ENROLLING IN A
REVIEW CENTER

OUTLINE TO COVER ALL THE SUBJECTS

Just like in a school, the review centers will also have a curriculum
where all the subjects you took during your college days will be
mapped out in the span of the review. Means, you will be saved of all
the hassle making a summary of all the subjects you need to study that
you encountered for the last 5 years!

This are their expertise and premium, rest assured that all the topics
and subjects that are only important and have a high chance of
appearance in the actual exam will be given emphasis.

BENEFITS OF ENROLLING IN A
REVIEW CENTER

KEY TAKE AWAY

Whichever review center you will choose, my advice is for you to pick
the best. Take this seriously because nobody wants to re-take the
exams.

Consider this your last and only chance, so give it all your best even
with this challenge of online classes due to the pandemic.

THE CIRCADIAN RHYTHM

Do you sometimes feel very lazy in the afternoon?

Do you feel energized and can do anything in the morning?
Or are you having that late night rush that make you motivated to study?

Lucky you I am here to explain the science behind our body clocks and
how it affects our performance throughout the day!

All the people in the world has their own internal

body clocks. If you know how your body clock works, you can definitely
use it for your own advantage to maximize your review sessions, and the
responsible for that is the Circadian Rhythm.

Circadian rhythms are physical, mental, and

behavioural changes that follow a daily cycle. They respond primarily to
light and darkness in an organism's environment. Sleeping at night and
being awake during the day is an example of a light-related circadian
rhythm. Circadian rhythms are found in most living things, including
animals, plants, and many tiny microbes.

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM & THE
BOARD EXAMS
Pero Kuya Adrian, paano ko naman ito magagamit sa pag-aaral ko para
sa board exams?.

Here’s the secret:

Do you ever hit that 3pm dip in the day and struggle to find the spring in
your step to do anything? Yung tipong tamad na tamad kang gumawa ng
kahit ano? According to many studies, the dip in your day is a perfect time
to get creative.

But let's back up. Each of us have a chronotype, which is a fancy word for
internal clock. It governs more than your sleep cycle though. It can
actually help us understand when we tend to have better focus, creative
spikes and swings in our mood.

2020 - www.EngrStateofMindPH.com - All Rights Reserved 12

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM & THE
BOARD EXAMS

Once we understand our chronotype, we can reallocate our daily tasks

into pockets of the day that align with our natural flow of energy.
Everyone goes through three phases during the day: peak, trough and
rebound (if you're a night owl, it's the reverse pattern).

2020 - www.EngrStateofMindPH.com - All Rights Reserved 13

EXERCISE

Most of us follow this energy curve, but if you want to deep dive on your
chronotype, you can check out the Power of When quiz online.

Daniel Pink's book When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing is also an
excellent resource:

https://thepowerofwhenquiz.com/?cn-reloaded=1

Check it out and discover your internal body clock and maximize your
review using the perfect timing!

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM & THE
BOARD EXAMS

KEY TAKE AWAY

Research shows that we should do analytical tasks during our PEAK

(where we have the most focus) and creative tasks during our TROUGH
(where distractions can allow us to make connections or discoveries
that would be less likely found in peak phase).

Your challenge for today is to make a list of all daily tasks and assign
them A or C (analytical or creative) and schedule them purposefully into
your natural phases. Now that trough is no longer useless time and we
don't have to push ourselves as much against our natural body
rhythms to a point of burn out.

List all the topics and subjects where in you need to be analytical or
creative and organize your schedule accordingly and see your
productivity level rise to the next level.

2020 - www.EngrStateofMindPH.com - All Rights Reserved 15

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM & THE
BOARD EXAMS

EXAMPLES

Here are some examples of tasks and suggested timing:

·       Learning a new formulas (A): Morning
·       Understanding a theory (C): Afternoon
·       Memorizing formulas and constants (A): Morning or Evening
·       Memorizing terms and definitions (C): Afternoon
·       Researching new material (A): Morning
·       Reaching out or "spruiking" (C): Afternoon
·       Character work (C): Afternoon

Now that I understand your chronotype and which tasks are analytical
or creative, you can use that information to create a daily schedule that
amplifies your productivity. You need to work on your analytical tasks
(technical practice, researching) in the mornings, when you’re at your
peak. Then during the afternoon trough, you should focus on your
creative tasks (understanding theories and memorizing terms and
definitions).

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM & THE
BOARD EXAMS

The key is to where your sweet spot is.

Kapag naintindihan mo na paano gumagana ang oras ng iyong katawan

ay magagamit mo na ang mga oras para makapag-assign ng task na
bagay dito.

But still you have to work and organize and look whats best for you.
Good luck and have a productive review schedule!

MORNING PERSON VS. NIGHT OWL

This is one simple information but extremely vital.

So, let me ask you a question;

What time will be your Actual Board exam schedule?

Yes, in the Morning and Afternoon after lunch.

Why am I telling this? Because you need to practice your brain to function
in those times. If you are comfortable studying and solving problems at
night and sleep during the day, you are training your brain to be active
during the night.

Do PRC conducts Board Exams at night? I don’t think so.

Keep this in mind.
Our brain consists of roughly 100 billion brain cells and 20,000 other cells
that is connected and constantly working for you. Practice in the right
timing and right environment. Always review in such a pace that you are
in the actual exams.

2020 - www.EngrStateofMindPH.com - All Rights Reserved 18

MORNING PERSON VS. NIGHT OWL

KEY TAKE AWAY

In short, train your brain to be awake in the actual time of the exam and
practice speed and play with the pressure. Act and pretend, so that if you
are in the actual exam, it will be just normal to you and you wont feel any
problems and prevent brain freeze and worst, blackout because of the
pressure.

Yes, that happens, so beware.

I know, I know, I hear you, mahirap para sa ating mga engineering

student na nasanay sa cramming at all-nighters na review sessions. I
admit, ako din ay mas sanay mag aral sa gabi noong college for an exam.
But this one realization hit me hard, dapat ako magbago kasi hindi mag-
aadjust ang board exam schedule sa oras ko. For this period of your life,
do your best to be active in the morning. This will have a big impact in
your review habits and performance during the actual board exams, and
also good for your body in the long run.

YOUR WALL OF KNOWLEDGE

This is a simple trick that I used because luckily I have a room for
my study and I make use of the walls to stick some reviewers and
all.

Ginamit ko ang mga pader para pagdikitan ng mga

sandamakmak na formulas at theories, para kahit saan ako
lumingon pag nasa kwarto ay nare-review pa din ako.

This helped me a lot because I am a Visual Learner. I know by

heart where the formula is placed.

2020 - www.EngrStateofMindPH.com - All Rights Reserved 20

YOUR WALL OF KNOWLEDGE

In the actual board exams, whenever I forget a formula or a theory, I visualize that I
am inside my room and remembering where that particular concept is placed.

Is it near the window? Is it near my electric fan? Or near my bed? That’s the idea.
You will now have a
virtual picture of where to find certain formulas in your head.

You will be familiarized by it because for the next 4 to 5 months of your life, that
will be the view you will sleep and wake up on. Ewan ko nalang di mo pa
makabisado lahat yun kung bawat lingon mo formula ang makikita mo.

If you don’t have your own room, don’t worry. You can make use of your house.
Post at every corners, on your bathroom, on your kitchen, or anywhere you can
think of. Be creative!

ST. JUDE OF THADDEUS: SAINT
FOR THE BOARD EXAM TAKERS
This Licensure Exam will be the last war you need to survive to get
that license and be certified practitioner.

To win this war, you need all the help you can get. You need to have
faith.

Regardless the religion, one thing we can add to secure that we
pass the board exams is the divine intervention, we need to believe
and ask for guidance spiritually.

Have you hear of St. Jude of Thaddeus?

During my review days, it was a famous belief that St. Jude is the go
to saint for someone who needs an extra lift like the board exams.
It is popular specially to the reviewees within Manila

2020 - www.EngrStateofMindPH.com - All Rights Reserved 22

ST. JUDE OF THADDEUS

My review center is near España,

so my friends and I make time
and visit the church near malacañang for
9 consecutive days.

I know to some of you, the Novena sounds corny.

But hey, we are fighting a war here. All the armies, troops, and
allies we can get is important.

By praying to the Lord, he will gave us faith and hope to ourselves
and provide us confidence and extra motivation because He is on
our side. Wouldn’t you like that Engineer?

This covid -19 pandemic situation got us locked up in our homes.
So even if you don’t get to the church and light your candle, you can
always sit down and talk to the Saint by prayers. Always be creative,
this will be your edge to pass the exams.
