The document provides instructions for 4 exercises involving the design and selection of couplings for power transmission systems. Exercise 1 involves designing a muff coupling to transmit 8 kW at 400 rpm between steel shafts. Exercise 2 involves designing a clamp coupling to transmit 25 kW at 300 rpm between steel shafts. Exercise 3 involves designing a protective-type rigid flange coupling made of cast iron to transmit 20 kW at 250 rpm between steel shafts. Exercise 4 involves selecting suitable couplings for a power transmission system connecting an electric motor to a driven machine through a belt drive, gear reducer, and chain drive.

joining shafts transmitting 8 kW at 400 rpm. The shaft and the key are made of steel with 45 MPa and 80 MPa allowable stresses in shear and crushing, respectively. The material of the sleeve is Cast Iron, with allowable shear stress 10 MPa. Service factor KS=1.2.

Exercise 2
Design a clamp coupling for
transmitting 25 kW at 300 rpm. Allowable shear stresses in shaft and key are 50 MPa and 45 MPa, respectively. The number of bolts joining the two halves of muff is 4. The permissible tensile stress in the bolt is 70 MPa and the permissible crushing stress in the key is 90 MPa. The coefficient of friction between the muff of the CI and the shaft of steel is 0.20.

Exercise 3
Design a protective-type rigid flange
coupling of casting iron, for coupling steel shafts, transmitting 20 kW at 250 rpm. Allowable stresses are: Shear stress in shaft, key and bolt = 45MPa Crushing stress in key and bolt = 90 MPa Shear stress in flange = 10 MPa Service factor=1.3

Exercise 4 Select suitable couplings for the power transmission system in the Figure. The electric motor transmits a power of P = 7.5 kW at rotational speed of n1 = 720 rpm. The diameter of output shaft of the motor is 42 mm. The speed ratio of the belt drive, gear reducer and chain drive are 2.2, 4.15 and 1.54, respectively. The power trans- mission efficiency the belt drive, gear reducer and chain drive are 97, 99 and 96%, respectively. The diameter of shaft connecting the driven machine is d2= 70 mm.
