"Carlos Bulosan's Histo-Biographical:America is in the Heart"

This paper aims to showcase the life of Carlos Bilosan through his Novel America is in the
Heart using the Histo-biographical approach. Carlos Bulosan is a Filipino author who is
considered both socialist writer and organizer. His writings has a lot impact for Asian immigrant
who can relate to his chronicles hardship, sickness and despair as he tried to living in America.
This work of non-fiction is semi-biographical,depicting his early childhood in poverty when he
was in his hometown Pangasinan, which carried on to discuss about his misadventures during
his immigration to the America. He experienced several instances and increasingly violent and
racism against Filipino during the Great Depression.

America is in the heart was divided into three meaningful aspects of Bulosan's life, there are
passages in the later second and third part of America is in the heart that are so upsetting and
depressing since they paint a cruel portrait of discrimination and loneliness as of stuck in the
foreign that supposedly promises opportunity for equality and autonomy but educated
immigrant like Bulosan, nothing could be farther from the truth.
It's book and it's honesty in chronicling and even the smallest cruelty-- and compassion. Carlos
Bulosan would often express the paradox of the white men and women and their treatment of
Filipinos. On the other hand, they are violent and abusive but they are sympathetic and willing
to assist a broken stranger. The setting of the book is majorly in Depression era because the
certain economic strain and struggles that American were experienced them seem to only
contribute to the way they blame American immigrants for almost every ill the American public
then perceives are their doing. But this cycle of racism and hate crime are not only committed
against Filipino but also the Chinese opium dens and gambling establishment. Still,Bulosan's
story made a strong argument that perhaps Filipinos frequently receive some of the worse
maltreatment than other asian immigrants during that time.

For example, a few of the American would either beat up,arrest or plain gun down innocent
Filipinos who are just there at the wrong place during the wrong time and they would either do
this things for enjoyment. There is a legal situation where they want to pass down the law that
will prohibit Filipino. Racial like the use of the term, 'brown monkeys' to describe Filipinos are
also according to Bulosan's story. Filipinos cannot get any stable job considering it's depression
but some of them were stick to their group until the next raid or hate crime occurs and Bulosan
himself had to run away from a few order just to survive.Essentially, this story of Bulosan is not
eay to swallow now a days because we are belong to the time where racism and discrimination
are slowly abolished in society.America is in the heart remind each and one of us just far we
have come-- and how far we still have to go.

"Nothing is better than life, even a hard life,a broken down gambler's life-- I wanted to live!"
America is in the heart contains Bulosan's life and his contribution to the good fight of
immigrants in that era of American society. Even though Bulosan has clearly live a life
improvished state and abuse,he had also learned to rise above and become his greater than his
suffering. Through writing,he had utilized his pain and talent to capture tolerance, justice and
unwaivering dreams.
