ASSIGNMENT 1 – SOLUTION
QUESTION 1

To find the reluctances, simply use the formula. Keep in mind that Reluctance of the air gap uses only
the permeability of free space.

QUESTION 2

To find the self-inductance L11 consider the effect of the Reluctances on coil 1. Similar technique should
be applied to calculate the self-inductances for windings A & B.
For Mutual inductances, consider the effect of each winding on the other two windings. The Mutual
inductance LAB is the effect of winding B on A and vice versa.
To calculate the time varying current we will have to differentiate the effect of currents with respect to
time. Following is the expression for the time varying currents
Part (d):

Question 3

This Question involves applying the principle of superposition.

In part (a), since the current in coil 2 is zero, the source can be neglected (shorted). The expressions for
flux density and flux linkage are calculated with respect to source 1 only.
In part (b), since the current in coil 1 is zero, the source can be neglected (shorted). The expressions for
flux density and flux linkage are calculated with respect to source 2 only.

In part (c ) of the question we now apply the principle of superposition by simply adding the answers of
both parts (a) (with source 1 effective) and part (b) (with source 2 effective)
