PART TWO 1 - ACCEPTANCE

1. ACCEPTANCE

The first operation to be carried out for diagnosis using the options
of the MODUS Station is acceptance of the vehicle.
Acceptance of the vehicle consists in entering the vehicle identifica-
tion data on the MODUS Station.

1.1 THE MAIN SCREEN PAGE

Acceptance starts from the main screen page which is displayed at

system power-on.

PART TWO 1 - ACCEPTANCE

1.2 VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION DATA

The identification data of the vehicle, requested during the acceptance

phase, are divided into three categories:
– vehicle data
– engine data
– descriptive data

Vehicle data
t
The vehicle data are as follows:
– Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), or chassis number,
consisting of 17 alphanumeric values
– model
– Product Identification Code (PIC) – Basic Model
Acceptance CANNOT be comple- The three codes – VIN, PIC and Model – permit univocal identifica-
ted if the vehicle data are omitted. tion of the vehicle. In particular the following rules apply:
1. there is always a single Model-PIC association for each VIN
2. each PIC corresponds to a single Model; however, different
chassis may exist (VIN code) corresponding to the PIC-
Model association selected
3. there may be more than one PIC (up to three) for a Model

7
PART TWO 1 - ACCEPTANCE

Engine data
The engine data are as follows:
– type of engine
– serial number
– type of clutch
If the data are omitted, acceptance can be completed but diagnosis
options regarding the engine area are not available (for conventional
engines not controlled by EDC).

Descriptive data
The descriptive data are as follows:
– customer name
– vehicle registration number
– mileage at time of acceptance
If the descriptive data are omitted, acceptance can be completed;
however, it is good practice to insert these.

PART TWO 1 - ACCEPTANCE

1.3 ACCEPTANCE OF A NEW VEHICLE

The vehicle has never been inserted in the database of the local
modus Station.
The vehicle acceptance procedure is described below.

Automatic acceptance
Automatic acceptance is possible only for Cursor, Tector and Com-
mon Rail vehicles.
Acceptance starts from the main screen page which is displayed at
system power-on:
– position on the main screen page
– select the NEW key
the screen page is updated; the system asks whether automatic
acceptance is required (ref. fig. 1.3)

if you select the CROSS key, the system accepts the vehicle accord-
ing to the standard procedure

– make the connections between the MODUS system and

the vehicle using the specific 30-pin ISO cable and turn the
key to the ON position

9
PART TWO 1 - ACCEPTANCE

the system checks that the connections are present and tries to
communicate with the following control units: MS6.2, MS6.3,
EDC7

If communication is successful and the vehicle is in the database, the

MODUS system performs automatic acceptance and positions on
the Diagnosis Option Selection page.
If communication fails, the system carries out acceptance according
to the standard procedure.

Acceptance through entry of the VIN (standard procedure)

Acceptance starts at the main screen page which is displayed at sys-
tem power-on:
– position on the main screen page
– select the NEW key; the screen page is updated and a key-
board is displayed (VIN Entry screen page)
– enter the last 7 digits of the VIN code using the keyboard
shown on the screen
– select the BINOCULARS key to start the search for the VIN

The system searches the archive and then the MODUS system
database and provides further information according to the results
of the search. Possible alternatives are as follows:
1. the VIN code is present in the local archive
2. the VIN code is not present in the local archive but is in the
database

database, the VIN NOT FOUND message is displayed:

dure.

PIC entered, select the CROSS key to clear display of the list
The system returns to the Vehicle Identification Data screen page:

PART TWO 1 - ACCEPTANCE

– select the VIN active field

– enter all 17 digits of the VIN code using the keyboard on the display
– confirm entry selecting the TICK key
The system returns again to the Vehicle Identification data screen page
and permits entry of engine and descriptive data.

Acceptance of the Model via the Range

The alternative method explained below can be used instead of the
methods described above (acceptance through entry of the VIN and
acceptance through entry of the PIC).
This procedure is however suitable only if the MODUS Station
knows the Model and PIC and if the vehicle to be accepted belongs
to one of the ranges present in the MODUS databases.
Acceptance always starts from the Main Screen Page which is dis-
played at system power-on:
– position on the Main Screen Page (ref. fig. 1.1)
– select the NEW key; the screen page is updated and a key-
board is displayed (VIN Entry screen page)
– select the CROSS key to clear display of the keyboard (ref. fig. 1.4).

database

proposed in the VEHICLE RANGES active area; the system dis-

– select the model from those proposed in the MODELS

active area; MODUS searches its databases for the associ-
ated vehicle data (PIC, VIN)

Non univocal Model-PIC association

As there may be more than one PIC code for a Model, after selection
of the model, a list of PIC codes may be displayed:
– select the correct PIC for the Model being accepted
– confirm with the TICK key

Non univocal VIN-PIC-Model association

As there may be several PIC for a Model and different VIN codes for
a PIC-Model association, a list of VIN codes and PIC referring to the
Model selected may be displayed.

In this case, you can choose between two procedures:

1. manual entry of the VIN code
2. selection of the VIN code from the list

Selection 1:
– ignore the list and select the CROSS key to close the window;
the system positions on the Vehicle Identification Data screen
page
– select the VIN active field (ref. fig. 1.7)
– enter all 17 digits of the VIN code using the keyboard on the screen

14
PART TWO 1 - ACCEPTANCE

– select the TICK key to confirm insertion

The system returns again to the Vehicle Identification Data screen
page and permits entry of engine and descriptive data.

Selection 2:
– search for the VIN code in the list proposed using the side
scroll bar (ref. fig. 1.9)
– select the VIN code required
– use the TICK key to confirm insertion.
The system returns again to the Vehicle Identification Data screen
page and permits entry of engine and descriptive data.
If no list is displayed, the data corresponding to the Model and PIC
code are compiled automatically.

Manual mode acceptance (vehicle completely unknown)

When the vehicle has not been inserted either in the local archive
or database, i.e. if MODUS does not recognize either the VIN code
or the PIC code or the Model of the vehicle, acceptance must be
carried out manually.

Entry of descriptive data

It is good practice to enter the descriptive data, although these are
not usually indispensable to complete the acceptance phase and
enable diagnosis options (the cases of fully manual data entry are an
exception to this).
The descriptive data are usually entered during the acceptance
phase. However, as in the case of engine data entry, if acceptance
has been terminated omitting the descriptive data, these can be
inserted subsequently without repeating acceptance.
