Chapter Five Engine Troubleshooting

Section One. Reading and Elimination of Engine Troubleshooting Code

1. Reading of troubleshooting code of engine


In the case of system or component troubles when the engine is running, the engine fault
indicator light will be automatically turned on to inform the driver to check and repair in
time.

The diagnostic seat is located under the instrument and on the right to the central junction
box.
In the case of emergency fault diagnosis, the fault indicator lights may also, via special
operation, be made flashing to read engine troubleshooting code, which is the most
economic way to obtain the troubleshooting codes.
The operating procedure is as follows:
(1) Check and make sure that the storage battery shall be able to accommodate the
engine’s startup turning speed; the engine and vehicle components are shut off; the
throttle is fully closed and the gearbox is at neutral gear;
(2) Turn off the ignition switch;
(3) Connect Troubleshooting Terminal 1 to Ground Terminals 4 and 5;
(4) Turn on the ignition switch but do not start the engine;
(5) If the system suffers any fault or the fault code is not reset after the fault is eliminated,
the engine fault indicator light will keep flashing and output the code of faults detected
by the system (the idle speed control valve will reset while the troubleshooting code is
being read);
(6) Shut off the ignition switch and disconnect the troubleshooting circuit after the
troubleshooting code has been read.
The rules for the flashing of fault indicator lights are as follows:
Report the faults as per the sequence of faults detected;

There is a 3.2-second interim between two adjacent troubleshooting codes; the number
flashes for 0.4 second and stops for another 0.4 second by turns; there is an interim of 1.2
seconds between adjacent numbers;
Number 0 flashes ten times and other numbers will flash for the their own number of
times accordingly;
Take troubleshooting codes 0110 and 0443 as an example:

Stop for 1.2s→Three times→ Stop for 3.2s→if the request for troubleshooting is not
stopped, Troubleshooting Code 0110 will be reported again……

Note: after the fault is eliminated, it is proposed to use a diagnostic instrument to get
rid of the troubleshooting code to avoid interference with the judgment of faults
during the next maintenance.

The major functions of this diagnostic instrument include reading the system’s working
data flow and system information, temporarily controlling and checking the system
components and reading or eliminating troubleshooting codes.

4. Troubleshooting code elimination


(1) Eliminate the troubleshooting codes with a diagnostic instrument;
(2) Disconnect the battery cathode for over 3 minutes (the engine needs initialization
setup).

Two. Engine data analysis


The analysis of engine data is done by the diagnostic instrument.
1. Regular checking
All wire harness fittings are reliably fastened in place;
Fuel circuit and vacuum pipeline are reliably fastened;
Screw on the bolts of the oxygen sensor and three-way catalyst to ensure the sealing of
the fittings; check the exhaust system at 1.3 atmospheric pressure if necessary, which
shall show no apparent leakage.
2. System initialization setup
Engine management system initialization: turn on the ignition switch and shut off 3
seconds later. The initialization setup will be completed in 10 seconds.
Fuel supply system initialization: turn on the ignition switch and shut off 3 seconds
later. Restart 1 second later. Repeat for five times and the fuel supply system
initialization setup will be completed.
3. System and vehicle status checking
1) Step 1: cool down the vehicle, turn on the key switch and do not run the engine (about
30s).

(6) Step 6: driving checking


The following operations must be carried out during driving checkup:
• Throttle opening remains wider than 10% for over 15s;
• Direct gear: when the car is driving at 80km/h, turn off the throttle and slide the car
for over 5s.

Three. Data analysis and description


Regular checking
• Loosened fittings may result in defected transmission and control of signals;
• The inlet/return oil pipe shall not be wrongly connected; pressure balance vacuum
tube of fuel pressure modulator shall be connected, failing which abnormal
emission and fuel consumption increase may be resulted;
• Charcoal canister cleaning pipeline shall also be connected properly, failing
which abnormal idle speed may be resulted;
• Any bad sealing between the engine cylinder cover and the three-way catalyst
may result in air leakage during engine running to damage the AFR balance and
reduce the transform rate of the three-way catalyst.
Checking of the system and vehicle status
Turn on the key switch but do not run the engine.
• Engine fault indicator light is on, but there shall be no fault;
• Air intake manifold absolute pressure sensor shall display the atmospheric
pressure then;
• Adjust the throttle pull rod and accelerator pedal screws to fully open and close
the throttle;
• When the oxygen sensor is being heated up, the display shall decrease from
450mV; after the heating, the voltage shall be under 200mV;
• The idle speed valve position is determined by the engine temperature; the valve
opening is small during heating while big during cooling.
Turn off the key switch
• If the idle speed control valve is not actuated and ECM power source is not cut off
immediately after the key switch is turned off, check if the ECM normal power

cable is wrongly connected to the ignition switch, which will make it hard for the
engine to restart, cause flameout and influence the exhaust emissions.

Start the engine


• If the engine is not properly started, check if the initialization has been completed
and the fuel circuits are running smoothly and uninterruptedly and check the fuel
system and ignition system components and their connections.
• In the absence of the problems mentioned above, then check the idle speed control
valve and if the instructions take effect on it.
Idle speed checking
• Engine fault indicator light is off and no troubleshooting code is displayed;
• Storage battery voltage shows if the engine is working properly:
Overvoltage indicates engine adjustor fault;
Undervoltage indicates improper engine wiring or engine faults;
• Air intake manifold pressure indicates if there is any leakage and throttle
clearance defect. If the throttle clearance is insufficient, there will be overpressure
and the engine capacity will be affected; in addition, the life spans of the oxygen
sensor and three-way catalyst will be substantially reduced as the throttle opens
too early and the exhaust temperature increases.
Moreover, blocked exhaust system (e.g. foreign matters in the exhaust pipe or
broken three-way catalyst) will also result in overpressure;
• Low position of idle speed motor indicates leakage into the air inlet system; high
position indicates that the throttle body and idle speed control valve are partially
blocked;
• Insufficient jumping of oxygen sensor reading indicates the failure of the oxygen
sensor.
Air conditioning system checking
• The target idle speed will increase by 100rpm when the air conditioner is turned
on and 50rpm when the air conditioner fan is turned on. As they are usually
started simultaneously, the engine idle speed will increase by 150rpm after the air
conditioner is turned on.
