SECTION A - DESCRIPTION

The Vincent Horizontal Screw Press handles wide variations of material and material flow, operates

without an operator, and requires minimal maintenance. The feed into the press can vary from very

wet to very dry, and from no feed to maximum feed. Use of stainless steel, quality components, and

old-fashioned craftsmanship have made the Vincent Horizontal Screw Press a superior machine,

requiring minimal maintenance.

The modern Vincent Horizontal Screw Press has a proven design, shaped and formed over half a

century. The same basic components remain today that existed 50 years ago, including the drive, the

inlet hopper, the screw, the screen, the cone, and the press liquor drain. Innovations have shaped each

of these components over the years, evolving the Vincent Press.

The drive consists of a fixed speed electric motor that is directly coupled to a gear reducer. Direct

coupling eliminates any concerns with belts and chains in harsh, abusive environments. A gear reducer

with a male output shaft, combined with a horizontally split rigid coupling, allows ease of maintenance.

Material enters the press through the inlet hopper. Once material is in the hopper, it is taken by a

continuous flight screw into the screen.

Inside the screen, the screw flights become interrupted and have a decreasing pitch. The interruptions

allow for resistor teeth to prevent the material from the co-rotating with the screw. The decreasing

pitch of the flights creates increasing pressure as the material travels the length of the screw. As the

pressure increases, free water in the feed material is pushed through the screen. The screen is designed

to allow water to pass while holding back most of the insoluble solids. The liquid that passes through

the screen, called press liquor, drains out the opening on the bottom of the press. The captured solids,

called press cake, exit past the discharge cone.

The discharge cone is actuated by a pneumatic air cylinder. The air cylinder is controlled by a manually

operated pressure regulator and a four-way valve. In general, increasing the air pressure lowers press

cake moisture.

SECTION B - SAFETY

Please read the entire manual before installing or operating the Vincent press.

The general rule of thumb for safety is to use common sense. The following list contains some helpful

reminders.

• Keep hands and feet out of the inlet hopper at all times.

• Keep hands and feet out of the press cake discharge area.

• Do not poke or in any way push material into the inlet hopper.

• Boards, bottles, and other hard objects can splinter and fly out of the inlet hopper. Eye

protection should be worn at all times.

• Do not remove any electrical covers unless electrical service is properly locked out.

• Do not wear any loose clothing when around the press.

• All operators must be thoroughly trained on operation and safety procedures.

• All safety procedures of the plant must be followed at all times.

SECTION C - INSTALLATION AND MOUNTING

The press has been tested, lubricated, and adjusted before shipment. Even though the gear reducer was

shipped with oil filled to the proper level, it must be checked in accordance with the manufacture’s

instructions before operation.

The installer must provide a substantial, rigid mounting structure and bolt the press to it. Bolt pattern

dimensions can be found in Section J. Supporting members should be firmly anchored to resist the

torque reaction of the press during operation. During installation, shims should be placed in the gaps

between the mounting structure and the press. This will prevent racking the frame as the press is

anchored in place.

The following service connections are required:

1) Electrical power, 230/460 volt, three phase, for the main drive motor.

2) Compressed air, 0 to 80-100 psig, 1 cfm, for the air cylinder.

3) Water hose for wash down.

4) Provision for press cake removal.

5) Provision for press liquor removal.

Note that the screw is removed from the cone-end of the press. Provision should be made for this

eventuality.

SECTION D - ELECTRICAL SERVICE CONNECTION

The press requires three phase, 230/460 volt under all operating conditions. Starters, breakers,

disconnects, safety switches, electrical cables, and connectors are not included. Select and install

electrical components that are compatible with the press motor and the rest of the plant.

When making the electrical installation, make sure that:

• A circuit breaker heater is included to protect the motor.

• Wires and conduit are sufficient for the rated voltage and full load amps of the motor.

• Ensure that the installation is compliant with all requirements of the National Electrical Code

and all applicable local codes.

IMPORTANT NOTE: After the electrical installation has been completed, check the direction of

screw rotation. The screw must rotate COUNTER-CLOCKWISE when viewed from the drive end.

If the screw rotates the wrong way, the press will not work and may damage itself.

SECTION E - START UP AND OPERATION

Before starting, check the press for the following:

• All nuts and bolts are tight and secure.

• The screen covers are in place.

• No tools have been left in, on, or around the press.

• The press has been mounted securely.

• All electrical connections have been made (see Section D).

• The gear reducer has oil in it.

Start the drive motor. It is a good idea to listen for knocking noises at this time. If a foreign object is

inside the press, it will be heard! Hopefully the press can be shut down before any damage is done.

The press should make very little noise. Presses will sometimes make a loud screeching sound when

the press is dry. The sound will stop once wet material is fed into the hopper.

After the press has run for a time, check the gear reducer for overheating. The gear reducer should be

warm, but not hot. If it is to hot to the touch, turn off the press and check the oil in the reducer. If the

reducer is fine and the press is turning in the right direction, start feeding the press.

The press cake will soon push the discharge cone open and fall out. Keep in mind that all materials do

not press alike. Some materials may press very well while others do not.

SECTION F - CLEANING

As with other equipment, a Vincent press requires proper cleaning during extended shutdowns.

In some applications, a shutdown of more than a day or two would qualify as extended. In other

applications, an extended shutdown may only be one or two hours. More simply, clean the press as

needed.

To clean the press, stop the feed to the press. When the press cake stops coming out, turn off the press

and lock out the electrical service. If necessary, isolate the drain line and press cake discharge from the

product line.

In some cases, the only cleaning necessary may be hosing down the outside of the press. In extreme

cases, the screen may have to be removed so that both the screen and the screw can be thoroughly

cleaned. Standards are dictated by the pressing application. For example, a press dewatering a waste

stream for landfill would require much less cleaning than a press pressing fruit to make juice for human

consumption. When hosing down the press, take care not to drive water into the motor or gear

reducer.

SECTION G - MAINTENANCE

General Maintenance

All machines require maintenance. If a machine never receives maintenance until it breaks down, that

is exactly what will happen. Remember that machines only break down when they are needed most. If

a machine is given care and attention, it will still need occasional repairs, but probably will never break

down. This is the purpose of this section.

Seal Plate

There is a shaft seal plate between the reducer and the inlet hopper. This housing is bolted to the A

plate of the inlet hopper. Leaking seals are rarely replaced except in conjunction with other

maintenance requiring removal of the screw. It is possible to replace the seal by unbolting the seal plate

and pushing the seal and the seal spring out of the seal plate. Cut a new seal, from the outside radius

in, so that the direction of the cut matches the direction of screw rotation. Slip it around the shaft. The

seal spring can then be installed and the seal plate replaced.

Screen Frame

The KP-24 comes with an inner stainless steel perforated screen, which is mounted in a clamshell

fixture made of stainless steel hoops and large perforation reinforcing. Tramp materials such as metal,

rocks, and sand can damage or cause excessive wear on the screen and screw. Therefore, precautions

should be taken to remove such items before they enter the press.

KP-24 11
Vincent
CORPORATION

The screen frame should be inspected during routine operation and maintenance to see that it is in good

condition and not in danger of failure. To maintain effectiveness, the screen should be replaced

whenever it is damaged or worn. If left in service, a damaged screen will allow too many solids into

the press liquor, and may even burst.

Disassembly and Reassembly

To disassemble the press, start by unbolting the cake discharge components: air cylinder, outboard

support bearing, clutch (if any), cone, and discharge spout. Remove the resistor bar from the screen.

The screen frame is now free to pull through the C Plate. To remove the screw, unbolt the rigid

coupling at the gear box.
