Unit: Poverty and World Resources. Writing Workshop.

Task 01: Skim through the text and label the paragraph with these headings: *Advantages and examples.
*Summary and writer’s opinion. *disadvantages and examples. *Introductory remarks.

Everyone is aware that the fast population growth is putting much pressure on the §1 :
Earth’s natural resources. That is why some countries have launched the so-called …………………………
‘population control programs’ which aim to stop the growth of their populations and to
…………………………
ensure a sustainable use of their resources. However, there has been much talk recently
on whether or not these programs are good for creating a balance between the number …………………………
of people and their needs for wealth and resources.
Needless to say, there are certainly some advantages to implementing these §2 :
population control programs. First, by reducing the number of people in the world,
…………………………
these programs can reduce the consumption of resources. As a result, the Earth’s
natural resources would last for as long as possible. What is more, these programs are …………………………
capable of reducing the levels of poverty and pollution since less people means less …………………………
poverty and less pollution in the world.
On the other hand, the implementation of population control programs is not
without major drawbacks. For one thing, the main obstacle to the sustainable use of
§ 3 :
resources is not the number of people in the world; it is how these resources are shared
between people. In other words, there are enough resources for everyone on Earth if …………………………
these resources are shared fairly among people. Moreover, discouraging births would …………………………
eventually reduce the number of young people who are the fuel of wealth production in …………………………
society. Therefore, this would create less productive and more consumptive societies
made up mainly of old people. Even worse, many countries, like China, have stopped
their one-child policies because of their bad consequences on society.
All things considered, I firmly believe that the world countries must refrain from §4 :
implementing population control programs. Instead, they ought to look for more …………………………
efficient ways of achieving sustainability. I feel that they can only do this through …………………………
ensuring a fair distribution of wealth and resources among everyone. …………………………
