On-task and Participation during Group Activity

Momentary Time Sample Format: 1 min interval

Directions: Set a recurring timer for 1 minute. Each minute as the timer ends check in with the student and circle the applicable code for both on/off task behavior and group responding.
After 15 minutes stop data collection. Data should be collected across different group settings each week.

Scoring Procedures:
Note two components of group instruction are scored for each momentary time sample. First the observer judges whether the
student is on task. On-task is defined as the students eyes on the primary source of instruction and buttocks in chair. The
primary source of instruction will generally mean the person running group time, but occasionally it may be on instructional
materials (i.e. a book, poster, props) or on an individual who is called to respond. Buttocks in chair means that the child has
direct contact with the seat of the chair. Any out of seat behavior is off task (unless the student is called to stand with the
teacher). Any staring around the room is off task. Basically off task is scored whenever on-task criteria is not met.

The second observation involves whether the student is responding appropriately. This judgment involves determining whether
the teacher has provided an opportunity to respond. If the teacher is talking or otherwise not providing an opportunity to
respond at the observation interval, circle “No Op'' If there is an opportunity to respond in any (ie. Sing, imitate actions, answer
questions, respond chorally, etc.) then the observer will need to score whether the student responded or not and if the response
was a group response or an individual response.

When observing the observer starts a timer and watches it. At the ten second time mark, the observer looks at the student and
then circles the appropriate codes. The decision as to scoring opportunity to respond and level of response is determined solely
by how the student is behaving at the exact time of the interval (right at the ten second mark.) Immediately after observing,
circle the appropriate codes on the data sheet. Look up again at the twenty second mark and then record observations by
circling the appropriate code on the data sheet. Continue to do this until all 15 time sample observations are complete or until
the activity is over, whichever comes first.

To calculate observation summary

Percent on task: divide total number of intervals with on task behavior by the total number of intervals observed and multiple
by 100.
Percent of intervals participating: add total number of intervals scored participating group and participating individual then
divide that sum by the total number of intervals observed and multiple by 100.
Percent of intervals participating individually: divide total number of intervals scored as participating individual by the total
number of intervals observed and multiple by 100.
Percent of intervals participating group: divide all of the intervals scored as participating group by the total number of
intervals observed and multiple by 100
Percent of intervals with no opportunity to respond: divide the total number of intervals scored as no opportunity for
participation by the total number of intervals and multiple by 100.
