 Introduction of Organization

Darakhshan (A project of Association for Special Persons):

The cofounder of Darakhshan School is Captain Maqbool, Dr. Salma Maqbool, Ms.

Saima Naiz and Dr. Fatimah Shah. The basic aim of the development of school is to

provide education and vocational training to women to empower their abilities and

encourage them to work independently.

Objectives:

 The main objective of this project is to study the NGO’s working, donors and

events.

 Darakhshan work for empowerments of women as well as their social and

economic welfare.

 Darakhshan aim to provide employment opportunities and professional

training.

Mission:

Darakhshan strives hard to provide skill training to women with disabilities in the

urban and pre-urban areas of Rawalpindi to achieve its vision.

Vision:

Transforming destitute handicapped women to become confident, financially

independent, self-reliant, and computer literate and contributing members of the

society.

Questionnaire:

 What is your name? How you started Darakhshan School?

Captain Maqbool Ahmed retired from Pakistan Army since 1974. He was motivated

to work for society and betterment of people especially those who are suffering from

disabilities. Finally, he initiated to serve his life for disables persons.

 Who is the cofounder of Darakhshan School? Who is the current holder

of this school?

Captain came to Rawalpindi to make his initiation practical, there was no branch in

Rawalpindi at that time so Pakistan association of blind define him to work. Current

founder of school is Captain Maqbool who is striving for this trust to make it more

worthy in terms of dedication to the society.

 What are your associations in the honorable work?

Pakistan association of blinds and Rawalpindi eye donor. This branch of Darakhshan

is affiliated with main campus located in commercial market, Rawalpindi.

He also found that Sri-lanka is the country that donate eyes most.

 What you are giving in school and who are your student?

School is mainly targeting disable, poor and less educated women to educate

them, to teach them skills. Captain said ‘our target is to develop self-esteem in

these women and eighty women are registered in our branch’.

 What skills do you teach? And How?

Different machines for knitting Sweaters, Baby Suits and embroidery. There is

computerized and audio system to make them fully understand about their

learnings. New books have been derived into audio and still it is ongoing for new

academics.

 80-90%profit is given to the women that we earn by selling these products and

rest is donated to Darakhshan School funds.

 Who are trainer/teachers for blind children education and providing

them skills?

Mostly teachers are also blind so they fell more motivated or more experienced to

educate themselves from the concepts of their own learning. A dominant effect of

inspecting is under Mr. Maqbool. Teachers who are good in their working or

subject teaching are able to serve here. Moreover, there is a total of 9 trainers/

teachers in the schools from which only two (2) are normal.

 What you have done for patients (blinds)?

Approximately, 1150 corneal transplants done in Pakistan due to the cooperation

of Darakhshan.

 Is there any NGO or trust or government involved to play key role in this

organization?

Mostly it is dependent upon donations and volunteers, with addition to the Mr.

Maqbool, family and relatives. Only ‘Disability trust’ (a very less amount) is

given by Punjab Government.

 Any Major Issue you are facing?

Transport is the major issue we are facing because women will not work is we do

not provide free transport. Because these is no reliable local transport and more

this will not be affordable by our students.

 How COVID-19 affects you?

5-6 months we were closed and now only 16 women are working who are trained

because they are receiving orders of sweaters.

Outcomes and Experience:

The main outcome of the project is to encourage people to help these NGO’s as they

are working for disable persons and help them to build new skills to lead a normal

life.

We have experience to meet disable persons that do not feel to be disable as they

can work more effectively as compare to a normal person. According to the teachers

and helpers of school the disable student learn more quickly than a normal person and

it is has been also proved by many NGO’s and articles.
