ARFCN channel raster Synchronization raster

Since the bandwidth of NR is larger and the granularity of the channel grid is
smaller, if it is still like 4G, it will take a long time for the UE to search for
synchronization signals on all frequency points of the entire bandwidth.
Therefore, in NR, The grid used for synchronization is no longer the same as
the channel grid, but another sparser synchronization grid. That is to say, the
SSB and channel bandwidth used for synchronization are aligned with different
frequency points, which will involve two different frequency rasters-Channel
raster and Synchronization raster, that is, channel raster and synchronization
raster. The center of the channel bandwidth configured by the base station for
the UE must be aligned with the channel raster, and all the SSB centers must
be aligned with the synchronization raster. Both frequency grids are absolute
frequency domain locations.

1.Global frequency raster and NR-ARFCN

Let me talk about global frequency raster and NR Absolute Radio Frequency
Channel Number (NR-ARFCN). We know that the frequency range of 5G is 0-
100GHz. In this wide frequency range, global frequency raster-we temporarily
understand it as a global frequency raster. The 100GHz frequency band is
divided into a total of 3279165 rasters. These rasters Numbering starts from 0
and continues to 3279165. Each number represents an absolute frequency
domain position, these numbers are called NR-ARFCN.

The number and frequency domain position will be corresponded by the

following formula:

each parameter in the formula is shown in the following table, the first column
in the table represents the frequency range, the second column represents the
grid interval size, and the last column represents the number range.

Substitute the parameters into the above formula. For example, the
frequency domain position of the grid numbered 0 is: F = 0 + 5kHz×(0-0) =
0kHz
The frequency domain position of the grid numbered 599999 is: F = 0 +
5kHz×( 599999-0) = 2999995kHz The
frequency domain position of the grid numbered 600000 is: F = 3000MHz +
15kHz×(600000-600000) = 3GHz

2.Channel raster
After defining the above-mentioned frequency domain grid, that is, ARFCN, 5G
uses ARFCN to divide the 0-100GHz frequency band into several operating
bands, as shown in the figure below (only part of it is intercepted).

Take operating band n1 as an example. The upstream frequency range is the
part of ARFCN from 384000 to 396000. Then the second column indicates the
granularity of the channel raster of the operating band. For example, if the
granularity is 100kHz, then there is a gap between the two channel rasters.
Will contain 20 ARFCNs, because the frequency band is less than 3GHz, the
granularity of ARFCN is 5kHz, 5*20=100kHz.

That is to say, channel raster is a series of subsets of ARFCN. In this

operating band, starting from 384000, every 20th ARFCN is 1 channel
raster, and the rest of the operating bands are the same.

3.GSCN and Synchronization raster

For synchronization, all SSBs will be aligned with Synchronization raster.
Synchronization raster is different from channel raster. It is not a subset
of ARFCN, but another set of absolute frequency domain positions . Each
frequency domain position also has a unique number— -GSCN (Global
Synchronization Channel Number). The frequency domain position
corresponding to each number is shown in the following table: For

example, in the 0-3GHz frequency band, when N=1, M={1 3 5}, GSCN is 3N+
(M-3)/2 = {2 3 4} , So:
GSCN numbered 2, its frequency domain position is 1×1200kHz+1
50kHz=1250kHz GSCN
numbered 3, its frequency domain position is 1×1200kHz+3 50kHz=1350kHz
GSCN
numbered 4, its frequency domain The position is
1×1200kHz+5*50kHz=1450kHz
when N=2, M={1 3 5}, GSCN is {5 6 7}, so the GSCN frequency domain
positions numbered 5 6 7 are: 2450kHz, 2550kHz And 2650kHz...Three three
as a group.

After GSCN is defined, since the frequency domain position of ARFCN is

absolute, the frequency domain position of GSCN is also absolute, so for each
operating band divided by the ARFCN range, the GSCN in it is also fixed, as
shown in the following table (Partially intercepted), the table will also indicate
the subcarrier spacing and time domain pattern of the SSB in the operating
band.

With these GSCNs, the terminal can search for SSB at these frequency
domain locations.
