Subject: Introduction of standard value of soot content in engine oil

1. Applicable Model and Serial Number

All models (All serial numbers)

2. Purpose
Introduce the standard value of soot content in the oil for KOWA analysis of engine oil.

3. Recommended value of soot content

Since excessive soot content in the oil can cause wear of engine internal parts, clogging
of oil filter, etc., it is added as a control item.
The standard value depends on the model and oil grade. See Table 1.
(For details, see PSN: AT03242.)
Table 1 Limit of soot content in engine oil for each model and each oil grade
Engine M odel
O il G rade φ95~114 Series φ140~170 Series (Include 12V140 series)
m ass% abs/cm m ass% abs/cm
C D ,C F 1.5% 77 1.0% 52
C F-1,G G -4, D H -1 2.5% 127 2.0% 102
C H -1, C L-4 3.0% 152 2.5% 127
Some analysis agencies use "abs/cm" as the unit of analysis value. In this case, you
can convert the "abs/cm" value into the "mass%" value by the conversion formula
shown below.
Conversion formula: mass% = abs/cm x 0.01993 - 0.0272
Example) Upper limit when DH-1 oil is used for PC850-8R0
mass%: 2.0%, abs/cm: 102

4. Explanatory Notes
1) The soot content in the oil of some machine models is sometimes indicated a little
higher. However, this is caused by the load during operation. This is not an
abnormality, as long as the soot content in oil and other oil properties are within the
standard value.
2) Some analysis agencies set standard values different from those of Komatsu.
However, judge the soot content in oil according to Table 1 when performing KOWA
analysis of engine oil.
