The following requirements should be met for oils used in Wärtsilä Nohab and Wärtsilä 25 engines.
1.1 Viscosity
The oils should be of viscosity class SAE 30 or SAE 40. For normal operation, oil of either class could be
used provided they are combined with different thermostatic valves as described below.
Caution! Engines running under high ambient temperature conditions (≥ 50ºC) should use oils of
SAE 40 class combined with thermostatic valves set to 63ºC.

1.4 Additives
The oils should contain additives that give good oxidation stability, corrosion protection, load carrying
capacity, neutralisation of acid combustion and oxidation residues and should prevent deposit formation
on internal engine parts, primarily piston cooling gallery, piston ring zone and bearing surfaces.
Use the following criteria when estimating the condition of used lubricating oil. Used oil that does exceed
the limits shown must be changed. Compare also with the guidance values for fresh lubricating oil of the
brand used.
In order to minimize the risk of lubricating oil foaming, deposit formation, blocking of lubricating oil filters,
damage to engine components etc, the procedure below should be followed when changing the lubricat-
ing oil brand.
Note! If possible, change the lubricating oil brand in connection with an engine (piston) overhaul.
If the procedure above is not followed, responsibility of possible damage and malfunctions caused by
lubricating oil change should always be agreed between the oil company and customer.
The tables below show oils suitable for use in Wärtsilä Nohab F10, F20 and F30 and Wärtsilä 25 engine
types. Section 4.1 contains oils primarily for engines running on LFO, while section 4.2 contains oils des-
ignated for engines in HFO operation.
Note! The lubrication oil specification should be used as a guideline. Wärtsilä Sweden takes no
responsibility for difficulties that may be caused by the oils.
Note! Should unapproved oils be used during the engine warranty period without prior agreement
about testing with Wärtsilä Sweden, the engine guarantee is considered void.

Note! Before using a lubricating oil not listed in section 4.1, Wärtsilä Sweden Technical Service de-
partment must be contacted. Lubricating oils that are not approved have to be tested according
to Wärtsilä standard procedures.
Note! Before using a lubricating oil not listed in section 4.2, Wärtsilä Sweden Technical Service de-
partment must be contacted. Lubricating oils that are not approved have to be tested according
to Wärtsilä standard procedures.
5 Turbocharger oils
Only synthetic based lubricating oils are recommended for use with ABB turbochargers. Viscosity must
be within limits and the oil must contain enough aging inhibitors and anti-foaming additives. See also
document 91 939 118 00, Selection of lubricating oils.
Oils for use in air starters of GA type should fulfil the criteria below.
Property Value
Viscosity 2 - 5 ºEngler (12 - 37 cSt) at 50ºC
Viscosity index (VI) 100 - 180
Freezing point -30 - -60ºC
Additionally, the oil should have good anti-rust and anti-corrosive characteristics. The above properties
are generally offered by oils for hydraulics. See also recommendations on servo lubricator oil reservoir.
