1. INTRODUCTION
Recently our attention was drawn to increased safety requirements for the Lifting
Devices for RTA Cylinder Liners (see our previous Service Bulletin RTA-67 published
on the 20.04.2004).
The previous Bulletin concerns mainly the tightening of the two screws for each of
the two suspension straps (see Fig.1 - 94206).
This Service Bulletin informs you about the retrofit solution in order to modify the
existing cylinder liner lifting device so that it will fulfil today’s safety requirements.

2. CYLINDER LINER LIFTING DEVICE MODIFICATION

Retrofit package

Following the stress calculation of all cylinder liner lifting device components, design
modifications were carried out to fulfil today’s safety requirements.

Note: The retrofit of the lifting device and its components is mandatory due to
existing safety requirements.
In order to ensure full compliance with today’s safety requirements the
following must be observed:
™ the described handling of the cylinder liner lifting tool is to be strictly followed and
implemented immediately.
™ the retrofit package must be applied without delay.
Generally for all engines, the suspension bracket (94202, see Fig. 1+2) requires a
modification which can be carried out by the ship’s crew. An instruction is included in
this Service Bulletin.
The other parts of the lifting device need replacing, depending on the engine type.

3.3. Order Procedure

In order to ensure that you receive the correct retrofit parts, we need the following
information from you:
- Ship name
- Engine type
- Dimensions as per Fig. 3 and 4 of the existing tool
- Engine equipped with or without Antipolishing Ring (optional)

5 / 12 Service Bulletin RTA-67.1

4. INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE RETROFIT
(For all RTA-type Engines except RTA76)

4.1. Engines without Antipolishing Ring

The retrofit work requires only the replacement of the parts included in the retrofit
package.

4.2. Engines with Antipolishing Ring

The retrofit requires the replacement of the parts included in the retrofit package.
On engines equipped with an Antipolishing Ring, additional machining on the
suspension bracket 94202 is required. This is necessary in order to fit the two
distance pieces (A).
Working sequence: (see also page 7 and 8)
1. The diameter K of the suspension bracket 94202 must be checked and the
value must be according to that given in Table C.
If necessary, the front face R as shown in Fig. 5, view F-F, must be built up by
means of welding and afterwards re-ground to the correct dimension.
2. On the suspension bracket 94202 four holes [diameter 14mm] must be drilled
according to Fig. 5 Detail T and dimensions as mentioned in table C.
3. The front face R of the suspension bracket as shown in Fig. 5, view F-F, must
be ground with an angle grinder to the respective angle [s in °] as shown in
table C.
For RT-flex60C engines it is a diameter (ø) and not an angle as shown in
Fig. 5, view F-F. The dimension is shown in Table C.
4. Fit the two distance pieces (A) with their screws and nuts.

4.3. Retrofit on Suspension Bracket 94202 for RTA76 Engines only

4.3.1. Engines without Antipolishing Ring
The retrofit work requires only the replacement of the parts included in the retrofit
package.

8 / 12 Service Bulletin RTA-67.1

4.3.2. Engines with Antipolishing Ring
The retrofit requires the replacement of the parts included in the retrofit package.
On engines equipped with an Antipolishing Ring, additional machining on the
suspension bracket 94202 is required. This is necessary in order to fit the two
distance pieces (A1).
Working sequence:
1. The diameter without the distance pieces of the suspension bracket 94202
must be checked and the value must be 751 mm.
If necessary, the front face as shown in Fig. 6, Detail R, must be built up by
means of welding and afterwards re-ground to the correct diameter.
2. On the suspension bracket 94202 four tapped holes [M8x10] must be
machined according to Fig. 6, Detail R.
3. The front face of the suspension bracket as shown in Fig. 6, view H-H, must
be ground with an angle grinder to an angle of 10°.
4. Fit the two distance pieces (A1 / K) with their M8 screws (M).

Note: The old parts replaced by the new ones of the retrofit package
must be scrapped.

5. TIGHTENING INSTRUCTIONS (TOOL 94201)

The tightening instructions remain unchanged as listed in the Service

Bulletin RTA-67:

™ The four screws to the suspension straps (see Fig.2) must be hand tightened only
(approx. 30 Nm)
Note: Screw length inside the thread after hand tightening to be a minimum of
1.2 x thread diameter.

™ The two special screws (94207) must be hand tightened only (approx. 30 Nm)
before evenly tightening the bolts. If the two special screws (94207) are correct
tightened, there will be no clearance between contact surface of the special
screws and the cylinder liner.

Please ensure that all vessels in your fleet having RTA type engines are provided
with the revised Maintenance Manual pages (for inserting into the existing Manuals
on board).

Removing and Fitting

Removal and fitting of the antipolishing ring

Depending on design of the cylinder liner 4 an antipolishing ring 15 (Fig. ’G’) may be provided at the top of
the collar.
Four suspension straps 94208 are fitted for removing and fitting the antipolishing ring as shown in Fig. ’G’.
The latter can be lifted with the aid of wire ropes which are attached to the suspension straps and
connected to the crane.
Before fitting, clean the seating surfaces on the antipolishing ring as well as the cylinder liner, and smear
the antipolishing ring lightly with oil. Further pay attention that one of the holes for fastening the
suspension straps lies on fuel side.
